Alistar Skins

15 skins available

Alistar is one of those champions where the skin catalog tells you exactly how long he's been around. Fifteen skins deep, stretching from 2009 to 2021, and honestly the quality range is wild. Some of these are genuine collector pieces that go for absurd amounts on account resale markets. Others are 520 RP recolors that look like they were made in a lunch break. Been playing Alistar on and off since season 3, mostly as a support pocket pick when my duo wants to play Draven, and I've tried almost every skin he has. Not gonna lie, the bull has some hidden gems in his lineup that most people sleep on.

How Alistar's Skin Collection Shaped Up Over the Years

Fifteen skins total. For a champion released in 2009, thats actually on the lower end compared to someone like Ezreal or Lux. Alistar's catalog breaks down to 11 Standard tier skins, 3 Epics, and 1 Mythic. No Legendaries. No Ultimates. That right there tells you something about how Riot views support tanks when it comes to premium skin investment.

The oldest skin is Black Alistar, which dropped alongside the game's launch in 2009. Collector's Edition exclusive. You basically cannot get this anymore through normal means. Seen maybe two of these in my entire time playing ranked, and both times the whole lobby was typing in all chat about it. The newest addition is Lunar Beast Alistar from 2021, which means he's been waiting over five years for a new skin as of now. Kinda feels like Riot forgot about him after that Lunar Beast batch.

The early years were all Standard tier stuff. Matador, Longhorn, Golden - these are simple model swaps with minimal particle work. Riot was pumping out skins fast back then, quantity over quality for sure. The mid-era brought things like Infernal Alistar and Sweeper Alistar, still relatively basic but with cleaner execution. Then around 2017-2018 things picked up with Moo Cow and Hextech, which are genuinely creative takes on the champion.

(Random aside: the fact that Alistar has a soccer skin from 2014 and a cowbell skin from 2017 but no Legendary in 15 years is honestly criminal.) The three Epics he does have - Blackfrost, Lunar Beast, and Elderwood - all landed between 2019 and 2021. That's when Riot finally started giving him VFX and model work worth the price tag. Could be wrong here but I think Alistar mains have been eating better recently even if the frequency dropped off.

Best Skins for Alistar

Hextech Alistar sits at the top for me. Mythic tier, special acquisition through Hextech crafting. The crystalline model is clean, the particles on his Q Pulverize have this satisfying shatter effect, and the W Headbutt leaves gem fragments on impact. Played maybe 30 games with this one after I finally rolled it from gemstones back in season 10. The recall animation alone makes it worth the grind. Problem is, you need to get lucky or stack up Mythic Essence, so most people will never own it.

Blackfrost Alistar is the practical best pick. 1350 RP, available whenever, and the ice theme works surprisingly well on a charging bull. The Q slam sends out frost waves across the ground, W has this frozen trail effect. His E Trample gets these cold mist particles swirling around him. Ult makes him look like he's carved from dark ice. Spammed this in Diamond last season during a support phase and the visual clarity is actually solid in teamfights. Your ADC can clearly see when you're going in.

Lunar Beast Alistar is the other Epic worth considering. 1350 RP, Lunar New Year 2021 theme. The red and gold color scheme pops hard on the Rift. His model gets this ornate armor treatment with beast motifs. Not sure if it's just me but the auto attack animations feel smoother on this skin compared to base. The W knockback has firework-style particles that look great in lane trades. Solid skin for the price.

Moo Cow Alistar deserves a mention even though its Standard tier. The cowbell. The cowbell changes everything. You lock this in and spam the dance emote in lane and the enemy bot lane tilts off the planet. Seen it happen in my ranked games more times than I can count. Last split I had a Moo Cow Alistar support who spammed cowbell every time we got a kill. We won that game purely off mental warfare. The skin itself is a simple cow onesie reskin but the meme value is S-tier.

Black Alistar is the prestige pick but lets be real, almost nobody has it. Collector's Edition only from 2009. If you see one in your game, that account is either ancient or cost someone serious money. The skin itself is just a dark recolor of base Alistar - nothing special visually. Pure flex value. Worth mentioning but not worth recommending since you literally cannot buy it.

Skinlines and Thematic Fits

Alistar shows up across a bunch of skinlines but none of them really became "his" line the way PROJECT is for Yasuo or Star Guardian is for Lux. He's got representation in Blackfrost, Lunar Beast, Elderwood, Infernal, Marauder, High Noon adjacent stuff, and the esports line with SKT T1. Scattered presence.

The Blackfrost line fits him well though. Big hulking ice creature charging at you? Makes sense thematically. The Elderwood skin leans into this ancient forest guardian vibe that also works for a minotaur-type champion. Could be coping but I think Alistar would be perfect for something like Arcana or even Dark Star. A cosmic bull entity sounds cool on paper.

Infernal Alistar is the obvious thematic match - fire bull, aggressive, angry. But the execution is just okay since it's an older Standard skin without much particle work. The concept deserved better. Marauder is another fitting line for a champion who's literally built around engaging and smashing into people. The militaristic armor works on his frame.

The soccer skin, Sweeper Alistar, is peak early-Riot creativity. Bull on a soccer field. Get it? (Sidebar for support mains: you know the feeling of loading into a ranked game and your Alistar has the Sweeper skin. Mixed signals.) Conqueror Alistar from the esports celebration line is actually quite clean with the gold and white color scheme. Underrated pick that I dont see enough people running.

Budget vs Premium: Where to Spend on Alistar

Here's the thing with Alistar's catalog. His most expensive purchasable skins top out at 1350 RP. No Legendary, no Ultimate. So the "premium" tier for this champion is just Epic. That simplifies the decision a lot.

If you want the best bang for your buck, Moo Cow Alistar at 975 RP or whatever it costs these days is genuinely the most fun you'll have. The cowbell emote spam alone justifies the price. For serious ranked play where you want clean particles and good visual feedback on your abilities, Blackfrost at 1350 is the move. Period.

The older Standard skins in the 390-520 range - Matador, Longhorn, Golden - are honestly fine if you just want something different from base. They're model swaps without new particles so dont expect much. But at that price point, expectations should be low anyway. Longhorn Alistar with the Texas longhorn horns is kinda charming in a dated way. Been running it occasionally in normals for the throwback factor since like season 8 or 9.

Real talk though, if Riot ever gives Alistar a Legendary with new voice lines and completely reworked animations, that would instantly become the must-buy. Until then, the Epics are where the value sits. 1350 RP feels fair for Blackfrost or Lunar Beast given what they change.

Why Alistar's Skin Future Matters

Five years without a new skin is a long drought. Alistar has been a staple support in pro play and solo queue for over a decade. His kit is straightforward - W into Q combo, peel for your carry, press R and become unkillable for a few seconds. That simplicity means he's always relevant in some meta. Tank support comps come back into favor every couple of seasons and Alistar is right there.

Might be overthinking it but the lack of skin attention probably comes down to his model. He's a big bull. Hard to do subtle thematic work on a champion whose silhouette is just massive shoulders and horns. Compare that to someone like Thresh or Pyke where the model allows for more creative skinline interpretations. Still, champions like Ornn and Sion have gotten creative skins despite bulky frames, so it's not impossible.

The champion's gameplay identity - hard engage support who dives the backline or peels for carries - means his skins need to communicate abilities clearly in chaotic teamfights. That's probably why the Blackfrost and Lunar Beast skins work so well. High contrast particles, clear Q radius indicator, visible W trajectory. When I'm playing Alistar in a five-man teamfight around dragon pit at 25 minutes, I need to see exactly where my abilities land. Good skins help with that. Bad skins are just noise.

For the Alistar mains still out there grinding ranked with this champion, the skin catalog is serviceable but not exciting. Fifteen options with three genuinely good ones, one meme legend, and one unobtainable collector piece. Fair warning, if you're picking up Alistar as a pocket pick for climbing through gold and plat, just grab Blackfrost and call it a day. That's the recommendation from someone who's played probably 400 games on this bull across multiple seasons. Maybe Riot will surprise us with something fresh. Until then, we work with what we got.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Alistar have?

Fifteen skins total as of 2024. Ranges from 2009 launch skins all the way to Lunar Beast in 2021. The breakdown is 11 Standard tier, 3 Epic, and 1 Mythic. No Legendaries which is kinda surprising for a champion thats been around since day one. Long drought since his last release too.

What is the best Alistar skin?

Blackfrost Alistar for ranked play. Clean particles, good visual clarity on Q and W, the ice theme reads well in teamfights. If you can get Hextech Alistar through Mythic Essence, that one's technically the highest quality. But for something you can just buy? Blackfrost. Not even close in my opinion.

What is the cheapest Alistar skin?

Several of his older skins sit at 390-520 RP. Matador and Longhorn are the budget options. They're basic model swaps without new particles or sounds. Unchained Alistar used to be free through a YouTube promotion but that ended years ago. For the cheapest purchasable option right now, check the shop for Matador.

Does Alistar have a Legendary skin?

Nope. No Legendary, no Ultimate, no Transcendent. His highest tier is Mythic with Hextech Alistar, and then three Epics at 1350 RP. Been waiting since 2009 for a Legendary and still nothing. Honestly one of the biggest oversights in Riot's skin catalog if you ask me.

What skinlines is Alistar in?

Scattered across a bunch. Blackfrost, Lunar Beast, Elderwood, Infernal, Marauder, High Noon adjacent, the esports SKT T1 line, and Sweeper from the Soccer Cup series. No single defining skinline for him though. He shows up everywhere but doesn't own any particular theme. Blackfrost fits him best I think.

Does Alistar have chromas?

Some of his newer skins do. Blackfrost, Lunar Beast, and a couple others have chroma packs available. The older Standard skins dont have chromas at all. If chromas matter to you, stick with the Epic tier skins from 2019 onward. Those are the ones Riot actually gave color variants to.

When was Alistar's last skin released?

Lunar Beast Alistar dropped in early 2021. That's over five years ago now. Massive drought for a champion who's still regularly picked in pro play and solo queue. Riot tends to cycle back to older champions eventually so maybe something's coming. But no announcements as of right now. Just waiting.

Is Alistar worth buying skins for?

If you play him regularly in ranked, yeah. Blackfrost at 1350 RP is a solid investment. Moo Cow is worth it for the meme factor alone. But if Alistar is just a pocket pick you pull out twice a season, honestly base skin is fine. Save the RP for your main. The bull doesnt need cosmetics to headbutt people into walls.
