Shan Hai Scrolls Bard

First time I saw Shan Hai Scrolls Bard load into my game I actually stopped moving for a second. Not sure if it’s just me but the whole ink-painting aesthetic on Bard specifically hits different from every other skin in the line. Been running this as my main Bard skin since it dropped last summer and I keep finding small details I missed before. The scroll motif wrapped around his body, the way his meeps look like little painted spirits. Genuine quality.

What Shan Hai Scrolls Bard actually brings

So the VFX are where Riot put the work in. His Q sends out this ink-stroke projectile that leaves a trailing brush effect when it connects, and honestly it reads cleaner in teamfights than base Bard by a mile. The stun indicator has these painted swirl marks around it. Small touch but you notice it when you’re trying to land Q through a wave in lane.

W shrines get the full treatment. Little painted lotus pads sitting on the ground instead of the standard health packs. They bloom as they charge up. Played maybe 40 games before I noticed the petals shift color at max charge. (Random aside: my duo partner thought they were wards the first time he saw them and pinged me for “wasting wards” in river.)

E tunnel is where it gets good. The portal entrance looks like youre stepping through an unrolled scroll, ink splashing outward as you enter. The exit has this satisfying brush-stroke burst. Been spamming magical journeys through dragon pit walls and the visual payoff every single time is worth the 1350 RP alone. R is a painted seal that drops onto the ground with calligraphy effects. The stasis bubble has ink wisps floating inside it. Caught their Jinx last Tuesday in a 4-man ult near baron and the visual of four gold-sealed enemies was chef’s kiss.

Voice lines stay base. No VO refresh. Standard for an Epic tier skin but Bard’s chimes and horn sounds already carry enough personality that it doesnt bother me. The recall animation is new though. Bard sits down and paints a landscape scroll, his meeps gathering around to watch. Clean stuff.

The Shan Hai Scrolls line and release context

Shan Hai Scrolls Bard released June 14, 2023. Mid-season 13 drop. Su Fu and Kudos Productions handled the splash, and they captured something genuinely atmospheric. The mountain-and-mist composition with Bard floating through a painted valley works better than most splash arts in the skinline.

The Shan Hai Scrolls series pulls from Chinese mythological scroll paintings. Bard fits naturally into it. Could be wrong here but I think he’s one of the better picks for this theme because his floaty mystical vibe already leans into that ancient spirit energy. Compare him to some of the more aggressive champs in the line and Bard just belongs here.

8 chromas total if you want variety. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple ink wash makes the VFX pop harder against Summoner’s Rift greens. Obsidian goes full dark calligraphy which looks clean in a moody way. Pearl is interesting for the white-on-white scroll aesthetic but I found it harder to track my own abilities in late-game fights around season 13. Rest are solid but those three stood out across my games.

Is Shan Hai Scrolls Bard worth 1350 RP?

Straight talk: this is a top-tier Bard skin. Might be overthinking it but I’d put it right next to Astronaut Bard for best overall package. The VFX clarity alone makes it worth considering if you play Bard in ranked at all. Peel with Q feels more readable, your E portals are visually distinct for your team, and R landing zone is crystal clear.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across all abilities, solid recall, strong splash. Still in the shop any time you want it. If you main Bard or even just pull him out for specific comps where you need roaming support with lane prio, this skin earns its spot. Been daily driving it in Diamond for months now and I keep passing on other Bard skins in my collection. Real talk though, if you only play Bard once every 20 games, maybe wait for Your Shop discount. For Bard one-tricks and mains? Lock it in. S-tier Bard cosmetic.
