First game I played with Mecha Kingdoms Garen was a top lane mirror against another Garen running God-King. Loaded in and honestly thought my model looked cleaner in the loading screen. That was January 2020, right when the skin dropped, and I’ve kept it in rotation ever since. The mech suit fantasy just works on Garen in a way I wasnt expecting.

What the mech suit actually brings

So the big thing here is Garen gets a full mech armor redesign. Not just a recolor or some minor texture swap. The entire silhouette changes. He’s bulkier, more angular, covered in plating that reads like a proper giant robot pilot. The sword is massive, glowing with energy lines running through it. Feels heavy. Looks heavy.

VFX got a real overhaul for an Epic tier skin. His Q lights up the blade with this golden energy trail when you proc it, and the spin on E has these rotating particle effects that actually make the hitbox feel bigger than it is. Not sure if it’s just me but the E particles seem slightly misleading in teamfights, like opponents misjudge the range. Could be placebo. His ult is the standout though. The R comes down as this massive mech-sword slam from above with golden energy radiating outward. Clean execution. Way better than base Garen ult visually.

Recall animation is where Riot put extra love. Garen summons this throne-like mech station, sits down, and the whole thing transforms around him. Looks straight out of a mecha anime opening sequence. Been playing this for years and the recall still doesnt get old, which is rare for me. Most recall animations I skip after a week.

Voice lines stay base. No new VO, which is expected at 1350 RP. Jamieson Price still sounds great as Garen so its not a loss. The base voice fits the mech fantasy well enough that you dont really notice.

The Mecha Kingdoms line and where Garen fits

Mecha Kingdoms launched January 15, 2020 as a batch. Garen, Leona, Draven, Sett, Jax all got skins in the line. The whole concept pulls from East Asian mythology crossed with giant robot aesthetics. Think Three Kingdoms but everyone pilots a Gundam. Clare Wong and West Studio handled the splash art, and they captured the vibe perfectly. The splash has Garen standing in this commanding pose with his mech blade raised, golden light behind him. Real power fantasy stuff.

Kinda feels like Garen was the poster boy for the Mecha Kingdoms set. He got the Prestige edition too, which tells you Riot saw him as the anchor. The skinline itself is solid but never came back for a second wave. One and done. (Random aside: I still think Mecha Kingdoms Sett is the best of the batch but Garen is a close second, fight me.)

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which is a shame because I think a darker color variant would have hit hard. The base gold and white is clean but an Obsidian-style dark mech Garen? Riot left money on the table there.

Is 1350 RP the right price?

Real verdict: 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New model, new VFX on every ability, new recall. That’s the standard Epic package and Mecha Kingdoms Garen delivers on all fronts. Available any time in the shop, no vault nonsense.

Where it sits in Garen’s skin lineup is interesting. God-King Garen exists at 1820 RP and that’s obviously more complete with new voice lines and the whole divine aesthetic. But if you dont want to drop Legendary money, Mecha Kingdoms is the best Epic option. Steel Legion feels dated now. Warring Kingdoms is good but the VFX dont pop as hard. Battle Academia is solid competition but plays a different fantasy entirely.

Been running this in Diamond on and off since season 10 and the skin still holds up visually. Last Tuesday I had a game where I dove their backline at dragon, popped ult on their Kai’Sa, and the golden slam just looked incredible in the middle of the teamfight chaos. Moments like that remind me why I keep coming back to it.

Real talk though, if you’re a Garen main who splitpushes and wants to feel like you’re piloting a war machine while you run down side lanes, this is the skin. Not the flashiest Garen has ever been but the execution is tight. Top pick for Garen mains who want that mech fantasy without paying Legendary tax. Might be overthinking it but I think the mech aesthetic gives Garen more visual weight in lane, makes the champion feel more intimidating pre-6 when you’re just walking at people with Q. That psychological edge matters when you’re climbing.
