First game I played with La Ilusión Gnar was a Thursday night ranked session, maybe 1 AM, and the splash loaded in champ select and my duo literally typed “wait what skin is that.” The whole aesthetic caught me off guard. Gnar in a Día de los Muertos inspired look with skull face paint and marigold accents across his fur. Not what I expected from the little yordle but honestly it works way better than it should.
How La Ilusión Gnar actually plays
The VFX on this skin hit clean. Mini Gnar’s Q boomerang trails marigold petals and has this warm orange glow that reads well against basically any Rift backdrop. Been running this in Diamond top lane matchups and the boomerang is easy to track even in chaotic teamfights. The W proc marker on enemies has a subtle skull motif. Nice touch.
Mega Gnar is where the skin really earns the 1350 RP. The transformation itself feels heavier with the new particles, and your ult slam sends out a burst of flower petals and papel picado fragments across the ground. Kinda feels like Riot put extra attention into the Mega form this time around. The W stun in Mega has updated ground cracks with orange and purple tones that match the La Ilusión theme perfectly.
Not gonna lie, the recall animation is my favorite part. Mini Gnar does this little dance with marigold flowers floating around him, and when Mega Gnar recalls its this stomping celebration that shakes petals loose. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the visual package carries it. (Random aside: I’ve had the splash as my League client background since it dropped and havent changed it once.)
One thing worth mentioning for Gnar mains specifically. The rage bar particles got a refresh too. The buildup toward Mega form has these warm embers that intensify as you get closer to transforming. Helps with tracking your transform timing in lane, which matters a lot pre-6 when you’re trying to set up ganking opportunities for your jungler.
The La Ilusión line and release context
La Ilusión Gnar dropped September 27, 2023. Late into season 13. Terence ‘Terrylefruit’ Cantal nailed the splash, the composition with Gnar mid-transformation surrounded by floating skulls and marigolds captures the whole vibe of the skinline.
The La Ilusión set pulled from Latin American folk art and festival culture. Gnar shares the line with Nidalee, Draven, Qiyana, Ziggs, and Renata Glasc. Could be wrong here but I think Gnar fits the theme better than most of the roster. The playful energy of mini Gnar matches the celebratory atmosphere, and Mega Gnar going full beast mode during a festival feels right.
9 chromas total if you want variety. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple skull paint against dark fur reads like a proper villain arc. Vivida is the standout though, hot pink and forest green combo thats so loud it circles back around to looking good. Pearl goes clean and minimal if the base colors feel too busy for you. Shop has it, permanent availability, so no rush.
Should you buy La Ilusión Gnar?
Real verdict: this is a strong Epic tier skin for Gnar. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX refresh on both forms, the recall, and the overall theme cohesion put it above average for the price point. Been maining Gnar with this skin since about season 13 patch 20 and I keep coming back to it over Astronaut and Elderwood.
If you one-trick Gnar or even just play him as a pocket pick for top lane, La Ilusión Gnar is worth the lock-in. The Mega form ult VFX alone sold me. Maybe just my experience but the skin feels smoother in teamfights because the ability particles are distinct without being distracting. Played maybe 80 games with it across two seasons and the only comp where I swap off is when I’m running a matching skin set with my duo. Skip it if you already own Gentleman or Dino and dont play enough Gnar to justify another skin. But for mains? Top pick for Gnar mains, no question.
