Sentinels of Light dropped summer 2021 and I remember the hype around the Ruination event like it was yesterday. Riot went all-in on the light versus dark narrative, and the Sentinel skins were the payoff for anyone who wanted to play the hero side of that story. Eight champions got the treatment, two Legendaries and six Epics, and the whole line shares this golden-white holy warrior aesthetic that honestly hits different from anything else in the game. Been running several of these in ranked since they launched and some aged better than others. Thats just how it goes with event skinlines.

What Sets Sentinels of Light Apart

Not gonna lie, the visual identity here is strong. Every Sentinel skin leans into this warm gold and radiant white palette with bright particle effects on abilities. The VFX across the whole line share a consistent glow, like concentrated sunlight channeled through weapons and spells. Compared to something like Star Guardian where the color coding is all over the place per champion, Sentinels of Light keeps things tight. You see a Sentinel skin on the Rift and you know immediately what skinline it belongs to.

The splash arts deserve a mention too. Riot coordinated the splash work so every champion looks like they belong in the same cinematic frame. Vayne and Graves especially got these dynamic action poses that sell the "chosen warrior" fantasy. The backgrounds share ruins and golden light beams, tying everything together visually even when champions are wildly different in gameplay.

Where Sentinels of Light really separates itself is the lore tie-in. This wasnt just a random thematic drop. The entire Ruination event in summer 2021 built up to these skins. Viego corrupting the world, champions picking sides, the whole interactive visual novel thing on the client. Whether you liked the event execution or not (plenty of valid criticism there), the skins themselves carry weight because they represent specific story beats. Irelia picking up the Sentinel weapon. Graves joining the cause. Each skin has narrative context that most skinlines just dont bother with.

Kinda feels like Riot was trying to do their Avengers moment with this line. Eight champions assembled against a common threat. The shared VFX language, the coordinated release, the event storyline. It worked better in concept than execution for some people, but the skins themselves? Solid across the board.

Best Sentinels of Light Skins

Sentinel Vayne is the crown jewel. Full stop. As a Legendary at 1820 RP, she got the complete package: new VO, unique animations, evolved recall. The crossbow redesign looks clean, the tumble animation feels crisp, and honestly her auto attack particles might be the smoothest of any Vayne skin. Been spamming this in Diamond ADC games and the visual clarity on Condemn is noticeably better than base. (Random aside: I've seen more Sentinel Vaynes in my games than any other Vayne skin combined since 2021.)

Sentinel Graves takes the second Legendary slot and earns it. New VO lines that actually fit the grizzled reluctant hero angle. His shotgun reload animation got reworked and the smoke screen VFX with that golden tint reads beautifully in teamfights. Could be wrong here but I think his auto attack sound design is the best part. That heavy thud with the light effect on each shell. Played maybe 40 games of Graves jungle with this skin last season and kept coming back to it over other options.

For the Epics, Sentinel Irelia stands out. At 1350 RP she punches above her weight. The blade dance VFX with golden trails on Q resets look phenomenal in extended fights. Lock her in for a ranked game and the skin just flows with Irelia's kit naturally. The recall where she meditates with the Sentinel weapon floating around her is a nice touch.

Sentinel Riven is another strong pick. The broken blade reformed in light energy? Chef's kiss. Her Q combo has these trailing golden arcs that make the animation cancels feel satisfying to watch. Real talk though, Wind Slash on ult with the Sentinel VFX is probably the most visually impressive part of this skin.

Sentinel Olaf might be the sleeper of the set. Not the flashiest, but the axe throw particles with that golden streak and the Ragnarok transformation where he goes full luminous berserker mode is genuinely cool. Played this into a Viego comp last Tuesday and the thematic irony was not lost on me.

The Champion Roster

Eight champions total. Riot picked a mix of roles which I appreciate. You got your ADC carry in Vayne, jungle options with Graves and Rengar, top lane fighters in Irelia, Riven, and Olaf, plus Diana and Pyke for mid and support. Decent spread for anyone wanting to run Sentinel skins across their champion pool.

Vayne and Graves fit the theme best. Both have that lone wolf energy that works perfectly with the reluctant hero aesthetic. Irelia's warrior fantasy translates naturally into the Sentinel concept. She's literally a blade dancer fighting for her homeland in base lore, so picking up another righteous cause just makes sense.

Might be overthinking it but Rengar feels slightly forced in this lineup. Apex predator joining a holy order of light warriors? The skin itself looks fine, the golden claw VFX on his leap are solid, but the character fit is a stretch. Pyke has a similar issue. An undead assassin motivated by revenge joining the good guys requires some suspension of disbelief. The skin execution saves it though, his ult indicator with the golden X looks menacing in the right way.

Diana works thematically because moonlight and holy light share enough visual DNA. Her crescent blade as a Sentinel weapon feels earned. Not sure if it's just me but her Sentinel splash is one of the better ones in the whole set, really captures that "warrior priestess joins the fight" energy.

Who should Riot add next if they ever revisit this line? Lucian is the obvious answer since he's literally the canonical Sentinel leader in lore but didn't get a skin in this batch (he got Ruined instead, which was a weird choice). Senna too. Maybe Garen for the straightforward holy knight angle. Could see Leona working perfectly with the light theme.

Tier Breakdown and Pricing

Six Epics at 1350 RP each. Two Legendaries at 1820 RP. No Ultimates, no Mythics, no budget 975 RP options. Pretty standard event pricing for 2021.

The Legendaries carry hard here. Sentinel Vayne and Sentinel Graves justify their 1820 RP price tags with new voice lines, unique animations, and noticeably higher production value. The gap between the Epics and Legendaries is real but not embarrassing. Sentinel Irelia at 1350 RP still feels like a complete skin. Same with Riven.

Fair warning, if you're trying to collect the whole line you're looking at 11,900 RP total before chromas. Thats roughly $80-90 USD depending on RP bundle pricing. For eight skins covering multiple roles, its actually not terrible value compared to buying individual Legendaries. I grabbed the event bundle back in July 2021 and dont regret it, though I'll admit Rengar and Pyke mostly collect dust in my collection. (Sidebar: the bundle discount was something like 30% off if I remember right, Riot always hooks you with those event passes.)

The Epics do the heavy lifting in terms of roster coverage. Six out of eight skins being 1350 RP means most players can grab their main's Sentinel skin without breaking the bank. And for 1350, the VFX quality across the Epics is consistent. No duds. Some are better than others but none feel like they cheaped out on the particle work.

Sentinels of Light FAQ

How many Sentinels of Light skins are there?

Eight Sentinel skins total. Olaf, Irelia, Vayne, Riven, Graves, Rengar, Diana, and Pyke all got the treatment during the summer 2021 Ruination event. Two Legendaries (Vayne and Graves) and six Epics. Solid roster size for an event skinline, not too bloated, not too thin.

What is the best Sentinels of Light skin?

Sentinel Vayne. Not even close in my experience. The Legendary treatment gave her new VO, smooth auto attack animations, and the best tumble VFX of any Vayne skin. Sentinel Graves is a close second if you play jungle. For Epics, Sentinel Irelia punches way above her 1350 RP price.

Which champions have Sentinels of Light skins?

Vayne, Graves, Irelia, Riven, Olaf, Rengar, Diana, and Pyke. Good role spread honestly. You got ADC, jungle, top, mid, and support covered. Been running Sentinel Vayne and Graves in ranked for seasons now and they still hold up against newer skins.

Does Sentinels of Light have Legendary skins?

Two Legendaries at 1820 RP each. Sentinel Vayne and Sentinel Graves. Both come with new voice lines, unique recall animations, and completely reworked ability VFX. The remaining six skins are Epic tier at 1350 RP, still solid quality but without the new VO.

When did the Sentinels of Light skinline release?

Summer 2021, tied to the Ruination event. All eight skins dropped together as part of the big lore event where Viego was trying to take over the Rift. Think it was around July 2021 specifically. The whole line came out in one batch, no staggered releases.

Are Sentinels of Light skins worth buying?

Depends on the champion. Sentinel Vayne is worth every RP if you main her. Same for Graves mains. The Epics are good value at 1350 RP, especially Irelia and Riven. Olaf and Diana are decent but not must-buys. Rengar and Pyke feel slightly off-theme, so maybe skip unless you really vibe with them.

Do Sentinels of Light skins have chromas?

Most of the Epic tier Sentinels got chromas through the event pass and shop. The Legendaries typically dont get standard chromas. If you missed the event pass chromas back in 2021, some rotate back through Essence Emporium or special sales. Check your shop periodically.

Will Riot make more Sentinels of Light skins?

Hard to say. The line was event-specific to the 2021 Ruination storyline. Riot hasnt revisited it as of early 2026. Could be wrong here but I think they'd need another major lore event to justify bringing Sentinels back. Lucian and Senna are the obvious candidates if they ever do.
