Heartthrobs and Heartaches is one of those skinlines where Riot said "Valentine's Day but make it hurt." Three skins. All Epic. All dropped in 2023 around the February event cycle. Not gonna lie, I didn't expect much going in. Riot has done the love theme before with Heartbreakers and Heartseeker lines, and most of those felt like corporate obligation skins. But this trio hit different. Amumu, Caitlyn, Vi. Two heartbroken losers and one smooth operator. The contrast is what sells it, and I've been running Heartache Vi in ranked more than I probably should admit.

What Sets Heartthrobs and Heartaches Apart

The visual identity here is tight. Like, genuinely cohesive for a three-skin drop. Everything runs on a pink, magenta, and deep purple palette with shattered heart motifs woven into the VFX. Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the few Valentine's skinlines where the "heartbreak" side gets equal treatment to the "romance" side. Most love-themed lines lean hard into cute and sweet. This one acknowledges that love also just wrecks people sometimes.

Caitlyn gets the Heartthrob treatment. Confident, put-together, the one doing the breaking. Her particles lean into warm golds and hot pinks. Clean stuff. Vi and Amumu got labeled Heartache, which. Yeah. Fits perfectly for both of them lore-wise if you think about it for two seconds.

The shared splash art energy ties them together. All three splashes feel like they exist in the same scene at a Valentine's gala or something. Caitlyn's posing with confidence, Vi looks like she just got rejected at the bar, Amumu is Amumu but in a tiny suit. (Random aside: Amumu in formal wear might be the saddest thing Riot has ever put into this game and I mean that as a compliment.)

Compared to Heartbreakers or the old Heartseeker stuff, Heartthrobs and Heartaches leans way more into storytelling. The older Valentine's skins were just "here's a champion holding a bow with hearts on it." This line actually tries to tell a micro-narrative through the three champions. Caitlyn broke Vi's heart, Amumu never had a chance. Simple but it works. The VFX on all three share the heart-particle system but each champion gets a unique emotional read on it. Caitlyn's hearts are whole and glowing. Vi's are cracking. Amumu's are already broken. Solid detail work from the skins team.

Color separation is good too. Caitlyn skews warmer, golds and pinks. Vi goes cooler, more blue-purple undertones mixed with the pink. Amumu sits somewhere in the middle but darker overall. You can tell them apart instantly in a teamfight which is more than I can say for some skinlines where everyone just blurs together.

Best Heartthrobs and Heartaches Skins

Real talk though, with only three skins this is less "best of" and more "ranking all of them." Fine. Lets do it.

Heartache Vi takes it for me. No contest. The gauntlet redesign with the cracked heart motifs is genuinely creative. Her Q charge-up has this purple-pink energy buildup that looks aggressive and emotional at the same time. Been spamming this in Diamond since maybe March 2023 and the skin just feels responsive. Could be placebo. Probably is placebo. But the E proc particles have this satisfying shatter effect that makes trading in lane feel crunchier. Her ult especially. The lockdown animation with the heart-breaking VFX on impact is chef's kiss territory for a 1350 RP skin.

I had a game last season, Vi jungle, enemy team had a Jinx ADC who kept typing "Vi diff" in all chat. Locked in Heartache Vi specifically for the emotional damage. We won at 24 minutes. Might be overthinking it but something about the sad Vi aesthetic makes the aggressive playstyle funnier.

Heartthrob Caitlyn is the flashy one. The confident energy carries through every animation. Her traps have little heart designs, auto attacks trail pink particles, and the ult channeling animation has her posing like she knows she's about to ruin someone's day. Fits Caitlyn's personality honestly. She's already kind of smug in base, and the Heartthrob version leans into that. Good skin. Probably the most popular of the three because Caitlyn mains are everywhere in bot lane.

Heartache Amumu is the emotional core. Which sounds ridiculous for a mummy champion but hear me out. His Q bandage toss trails broken heart particles. His W crying zone has little heart fragments floating in it. The R ultimate is where it peaks though. The stun zone pulses with this shattered heart explosion that looks genuinely dramatic for Amumu. Been playing him support sometimes in normals with this skin and it gets comments. People notice it.

Weakest of the three? Probably Amumu purely because his base model is small and some of the detail work gets lost at normal camera distance. But for Amumu mains this is easily a top-tier option.

The Champion Roster

Three champions. That's it. Caitlyn, Vi, and Amumu. Small roster but it works because Riot actually thought about the picks instead of just slapping the theme on whoever was due for a skin.

Vi and Caitlyn are the obvious pairing. Their whole thing in Arcane and in-game lore is complicated relationship energy. Making one the Heartthrob and the other the Heartache tells a story without a single word of VO. Smart pick. Kinda feels like Riot planned this one around the Vi-Caitlyn dynamic first and then asked "who else fits the sad side?"

Amumu is the wildcard and honestly the best addition. He's literally the saddest champion in League. Putting him in a Heartache skin is so on-the-nose it circles back around to brilliant. (Sidebar: Amumu mains specifically know the pain of existing in this game as a champion everyone forgets about between reworks.) The tiny formal outfit on his model is peak character design. He showed up to the Valentine's event alone. Of course he did.

Who should join if Riot ever expands this? Viego feels obvious but maybe too obvious. He's already the "ruined by love" guy. Rakan without Xayah would be interesting for the Heartache side. Or Thresh, pre-ruination, as a Heartthrob. Fair warning, I'm just theorycrafting here, Riot hasn't announced anything. But three skins feels like the line could grow if the concept tested well.

The roster's biggest strength is restraint. Three picks, all justified, no filler champion thrown in because they needed a fourth. Respect that.

Tier and Price Breakdown

Straightforward here. All three skins are Epic tier at 1350 RP each. No Legendary carrying the line. No budget 975 skin dragging it down. Uniform quality across the board.

1350 RP gets you new model, new VFX, new recall animation, new SFX. Voice lines stay base for all three which is expected at this price point. No new VO. For the price they're solid. Maybe not gonna lie I think Heartache Vi slightly overdelivers for 1350, her VFX feel closer to what I'd expect at a higher tier. Caitlyn and Amumu are standard Epic quality. Good but not "wow I cant believe this is only 1350" levels.

If you're buying all three the bundle was available during the Valentine's 2023 event. Not sure if it comes back annually. Individual purchase at 1350 each means 4050 RP for the complete set. Standard pricing. Nothing special on the discount front but nothing offensive either.

The line doesnt have a Prestige or Mythic variant which is surprising given how Riot loves slapping Prestige editions on event skins. Maybe the three-skin roster was too small to justify it. Or maybe they just didn't want to pick favorites between Caitlyn and Vi for who gets the Prestige. Political decision probably.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Heartthrobs and Heartaches skins are there?

Three total. Heartthrob Caitlyn, Heartache Vi, and Heartache Amumu. All dropped together during the Valentine's 2023 event. Small roster but honestly it works better tight like this. Not every skinline needs 12 champions to justify existing. Quality over quantity and Riot nailed the picks here.

What is the best Heartthrobs and Heartaches skin?

Heartache Vi in my opinion. The gauntlet redesign and shatter VFX on her abilities feel premium for an Epic skin. Heartthrob Caitlyn is close second, her confident aesthetic suits the champion perfectly. Amumu rounds it out as the emotional wildcard. Really depends on which champion you play though, all three deliver at the 1350 tier.

Which champions have Heartthrobs and Heartaches skins?

Caitlyn as Heartthrob, Vi and Amumu as Heartache. The line plays on the Vi-Caitlyn relationship dynamic from Arcane and League lore. Amumu got picked because he's literally the saddest champion in the game. Makes perfect sense for a Valentine's heartbreak theme. Three champions, all justified picks.

Does Heartthrobs and Heartaches have Legendary skins?

Nope. All three are Epic tier at 1350 RP. No Legendary, no Ultimate, no Prestige. Uniform quality across the board. Honestly a Legendary Heartthrob Caitlyn with new voice lines could have been incredible but Riot kept it simple. The line works fine at Epic tier, the VFX carry enough weight on their own.

When did the Heartthrobs and Heartaches skinline release?

All three skins dropped in early 2023 during the Valentine's Day event window. Patch 13.3 if I remember right, maybe 13.4. February timeframe. Riot's been doing annual Valentine's skin drops for years and this was the 2023 batch. Replaced the older Heartseeker naming convention with something that has more storytelling built in.

Are Heartthrobs and Heartaches skins worth buying?

If you main any of these three champions, yeah. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get, especially Vi whose VFX slightly overdeliver. Caitlyn has so many skins that competition is steep but Heartthrob holds its own. Amumu has fewer options so Heartache stands out more in his catalog. Not must-buys for non-mains but solid for the price.

Do Heartthrobs and Heartaches skins have chromas?

Yeah all three got chroma sets when they launched. Standard Epic treatment, each skin has multiple color variants you can grab. Some were event-exclusive during Valentine's 2023 so if you missed those specific ones you might be out of luck. The base colorways are strong enough that chromas feel optional but nice to have if you want variety.

Will Riot make more Heartthrobs and Heartaches skins?

No official word from Riot on expanding the line. They've done one-off Valentine's batches before that never got follow-ups. Could see it happening though if the skins sold well. Rakan, Viego, or Thresh would fit the theme naturally. Maybe just my experience but I see these skins in games often enough that demand probably exists for more.
