Empyrean Skins

All 16 skins in the Empyrean skinline. Browse splash art, chromas, and detailed reviews for every Empyrean skin in League of Legends.

Empyrean is one of those skinlines where Riot went full sci-fi fever dream and honestly it works. The whole aesthetic sits somewhere between digital ascension and interdimensional chaos, neon purples and electric blues bleeding into each other like someone spilled a galaxy onto the champion models. Been seeing these skins pop up in my Diamond games since late 2022 and they always catch my eye on the loading screen. Not sure if it's just me but theres something about the Empyrean color palette that reads cleaner on the Rift than most cosmic-themed lines. 16 skins deep now across two years of releases, and the lineup hits harder than I expected when the first batch dropped.

What Sets Empyrean Apart from Other Skinlines

The visual signature here is unmistakable. Deep violet base tones with cyan and magenta energy trails on every ability. Riot leaned into this fractured-reality look where champion models have these glowing seams running through them, like they're barely holding together from the raw power coursing through. Think of it as Dark Star's edgy cousin who discovered synthwave.

Kinda feels like the VFX team had a specific brief for this one: make everything look like it's vibrating at a frequency humans shouldnt perceive. The particle effects across the whole line share this shattered-glass quality. Abilities leave behind these crystalline fragments that dissolve into mist. Compare that to something like Cosmic where everything flows smooth and circular. Empyrean is angular. Jagged. Every Q and E leaves sharp edges on the screen.

The splash arts tie the line together better than most skinlines manage. There's a consistent background motif of this void-like purple dimension with floating geometric structures. Feels like all 16 champions exist in the same plane of reality, which sounds basic but you'd be surprised how many skinlines fail at visual cohesion. Look at some of the older Infernal splashes versus the newer ones. Night and day. Empyrean nailed consistency from the jump.

(Random aside: I set Empyrean Pyke's splash as my desktop background for like three months straight. The composition on that one is unreal.)

Color palette wise you're looking at a core of deep purple, electric blue, and hot pink with white energy accents. Some skins lean heavier into the blue like Empyrean Zed, others push the pink like Empyrean Lux. But they all share that base violet foundation. Real talk though, the color scheme could get repetitive across 16 skins if Riot hadnt varied the intensity per champion. Brand runs hotter with more aggressive oranges bleeding into the purple. Zac goes full translucent neon. Smart choices.

Best Empyrean Skins Worth Your RP

Empyrean Pyke sits at the top and its not even close. Legendary tier, 1820 RP, and it earns every point. The recall animation alone sold me. Played maybe 40 games of Pyke support in ranked last November just because this skin made his kit feel completely different. New voice lines, new animations on the hook, the ult execute visual is this massive dimensional tear that opens under the target. Been spamming this in Diamond whenever I get support and honestly the skin might be carrying my Pyke winrate.

Empyrean Varus is the other Legendary and it delivers almost as hard. The Q charge-up has this building energy effect where particles swirl tighter and tighter until release. Gorgeous stuff. If you play ADC and Varus is in your pool, this is the skin. Period. 1820 RP well spent for mains. The new VO gives him this otherworldly calm that fits the Empyrean theme perfectly. Locked in this skin for my last 30 or so Varus games and I dont see myself switching back.

Empyrean Jhin deserves a shout even as an Epic. 1350 RP and the fourth shot visual is this massive burst of purple energy. Jhin mains already know, but the curtain call (R) with Empyrean feels cinematic in a way that even Dark Cosmic Jhin struggles to match. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack sounds on Empyrean Jhin are slightly more satisfying than any other Jhin skin. That crisp click on the fourth hit. Chef's kiss.

Empyrean Kayle rounds out my top picks. The Epic version at 1350 RP already looks clean, but if you managed to grab Prestige Empyrean Kayle, thats the real prize. The Prestige variant swaps the purple for gold and white energy, and on a champion that literally ascends through forms during the game, the Empyrean aesthetic fits like a glove. Watched a Kayle one-trick in my ranked game last week absolutely demolish the enemy comp post-16 and the skin made every teamfight look like a light show.

Empyrean Zed and Empyrean Akali both deserve mentions too. Zed's shadow animations in the Empyrean style create these ghostly afterimages that look incredible during combos. Akali's shroud turns into this pulsing void zone. Both at 1350 RP and both strong picks for assassin mains climbing through ranked.

The Champion Roster and Who Fits the Theme

16 champions in the Empyrean line and the roster is genuinely solid. Not gonna lie, when I first saw the initial batch I was worried it'd be another "slap it on whoever sells" situation. But most of these feel intentional.

Pyke and Nocturne are the standouts for thematic fit. Pyke already has this supernatural underwater predator thing going, and translating that into interdimensional energy works perfectly. Nocturne is literally a nightmare entity so giving him the fractured-reality Empyrean treatment felt obvious in hindsight. His Q trail in the Empyrean version is this gorgeous streak of violet that lingers on the Rift longer than base. Noticed it specifically during a game around 1 AM on a Tuesday when I was grinding for LP, the dark map made those particle effects pop even harder.

K'Sante getting an Empyrean skin plus the Prestige variant made sense from a design perspective. His kit has that duality thing going with the wall-breaking ult, and the Empyrean VFX emphasize the transformation well. Brand is another natural fit. Fire champion plus energy effects equals visual fireworks. His passive burn with Empyrean particles stacking looks menacing in lane.

Might be overthinking it but Zac feels like the weirdest inclusion. A blob champion in a sleek sci-fi skinline? It works better than it should honestly. The translucent Empyrean Zac model with energy swirling inside the blob is actually one of the more creative interpretations in the whole line. Lux, Malzahar, Vex, Jax, and more fill out the roster. Some fit tighter than others but none feel outright forced.

Who should Riot add next? An Empyrean Kassadin would write itself. The void-walking mage who jumps between dimensions? Come on. Empyrean Thresh could be incredible too. Maybe an Empyrean Yone with the spirit/body duality cranked up to eleven through the dimensional fracture aesthetic. (Sidebar for Yone mains: you know his E soul-split would look insane with Empyrean particles.)

Tier Breakdown and Price Range

The line runs 1350 to 1820 RP. 12 Epics at 1350 form the backbone. Two Legendaries in Pyke and Varus at 1820 each carry the premium end. Two Mythic Prestige editions for Kayle and K'Sante sit outside the normal shop rotation.

Honestly the Epics do the heavy lifting here. Not every skinline needs Legendaries to be good, but Empyrean benefits massively from having Pyke and Varus at that tier. The new animations and voice lines elevate the whole line's perceived quality. When you see an Empyrean Legendary in your game, it raises the bar for what you expect from the Epics too.

Price wise, 1350 RP for the Epics feels fair across the board. Every Epic in this line gets new VFX on all abilities, new recall animation, and the Empyrean model changes. Standard Epic package but executed well. The two Legendaries at 1820 earn their price through new VO and completely overhauled animation sets. Could be coping but I think Empyrean has one of the better value propositions across its whole roster compared to lines like Eclipse or Broken Covenant where quality varies wildly between the best and worst skins in the set.

Season 12 and 13 were when these dropped, spanning 2022 to 2024. Three separate release waves kept the line fresh instead of dumping everything at once. Smart move by Riot. Each wave had time to breathe in the shop before the next batch hit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Empyrean skins are there?

16 Empyrean skins total as of 2024. That includes 12 Epics, 2 Legendaries for Pyke and Varus, and 2 Prestige Mythic variants for Kayle and K'Sante. Solid lineup for a skinline thats only been around since 2022. Riot dropped them across three waves so the collection built up faster than you'd expect.

What is the best Empyrean skin?

Empyrean Pyke. Not even debatable in my opinion. The Legendary treatment gave Pyke completely new animations, voice lines, and the ult execute effect is genuinely the best in his entire skin catalog. Been running it since release and nothing else comes close. Empyrean Varus is a strong second pick if you play ADC more than support.

Which champions have Empyrean skins?

Pyke, Varus, Kayle, K'Sante, Jhin, Zed, Akali, Lux, Brand, Nocturne, Jax, Malzahar, Zac, and Vex all have Empyrean skins. Kayle and K'Sante both got Prestige variants on top of their base Empyrean versions. Mix of assassins, mages, and a couple tanks in there.

Does Empyrean have Legendary skins?

Two Legendaries. Empyrean Pyke and Empyrean Varus both sit at 1820 RP with full animation overhauls, new voice lines, and unique recall animations. Both are worth the Legendary price if you play those champions in ranked. The new VO on each one fits the dimensional theme perfectly.

When did the Empyrean skinline release?

First wave dropped in 2022 during season 12. Riot kept adding to the line through 2023 and into 2024 with additional champion batches. Three separate release waves total. The staggered approach let each set of skins get proper attention instead of drowning in a massive dump.

Are Empyrean skins worth buying?

For the champions you actually main, yes. The VFX quality across the line is consistently high. Epics at 1350 RP deliver good value with full ability reskins. The Legendaries at 1820 are top tier purchases for Pyke and Varus players specifically. Maybe skip if the purple color scheme isnt your thing though. Personal taste matters.

Do Empyrean skins have chromas?

Most of the Epic tier Empyrean skins have chromas available. The exact count varies per champion but you can expect the standard chroma package on most of the 1350 RP options. Legendaries typically dont get chromas though, so Pyke and Varus are locked to their base Empyrean look. The Prestige variants are their own separate color treatment.

Will Riot make more Empyrean skins?

Hard to say for certain. Riot has added to Empyrean across three waves already which shows they see value in the line. The dimensional aesthetic has room for more champions easily. Take this with a grain of salt but given how well received the line has been, I'd bet on at least one more wave showing up eventually. Kassadin and Thresh feel like obvious picks.
