Illaoi is one of those champions where the skin catalog feels criminally small for how long she's been in the game. Five skins since 2015. Thats almost a decade of waiting between drops for mains who've been grinding ranked with the Kraken Priestess since day one. Not gonna lie, I think Riot just doesnt know what to do with her tentacle fantasy half the time. But the skins she does have? Most of them hit harder than you'd expect at 1350 RP. Been playing Illaoi on and off since season 6 and every skin release felt like a mini-event for the community because they're so rare.

How Illaoi's Skin Collection Shaped Up Over the Years

Five skins. All Epic tier. All 1350 RP. Riot gave Illaoi the most consistent pricing in the game and honestly I'm not sure if thats a compliment or an insult. No Legendary, no budget 750 option, no Mythic chase skin. Just five clean Epic skins spread across nine years. Could be wrong here but I think she might have one of the lowest skin counts for any champion released before 2016.

Void Bringer dropped alongside her release back in November 2015. That was the only option for years. Resistance Illaoi came in 2018, which means mains waited three full years for skin number two. Three years of the same tentacles in every ranked game. (sidebar for anyone who wasnt around back then: Illaoi mains were LOUD on Reddit about the skin drought)

Then Cosmic Invoker showed up in 2020. Snow Moon in 2023. Battle Bear in 2024. The pace picked up but five total skins for a champion approaching her tenth anniversary is still rough. Compare that to Lux or Ezreal and it's almost funny. Every single skin is 1350 RP so at least you know exactly what you're getting into budget-wise. No surprises. No Legendary tax.

The year range from 2015 to 2024 means you get a nice visual timeline of how Riot's skin quality evolved. Void Bringer looks like a 2015 skin. Battle Bear looks like a 2024 skin. The difference in particle quality alone tells the whole story of where League's art team has gone.

Best Skins for Illaoi

Real talk though, ranking five skins is easier than ranking twenty but the gap between best and worst here is smaller than you'd think. Every skin changes the tentacle model and particles which is basically the whole champion identity.

Cosmic Invoker Illaoi is my top pick. Full stop. The tentacles become these galaxy-infused cosmic appendages and the Q slam sends out stellar particles that look clean on the Rift. Her W leap has this purple-blue cosmic trail, the E spirit pull looks like you're ripping someone's soul through a nebula. Spammed this in Diamond for maybe 40 games last season and the visual clarity is actually better than base. Not sure if it's just me but the tentacle hitbox feels easier to track with the cosmic VFX.

Snow Moon Illaoi comes in second. The winter theme works surprisingly well with her kit. Her ult sends out these frost-tinged tentacles that slam down with ice particle effects. Took this into ranked during the winter split and the whole aesthetic just fits the lane bully vibe. The blue-white color palette stands out against Summoner's Rift without being overkill. Q feels crisp. W animation reads clean.

Resistance Illaoi deserves the bronze medal. The mecha-tentacle thing shouldn't work but it does. Her tentacles become these mechanical arms that feel chunky and impactful. The R especially looks heavy, like you're dropping industrial machinery on people. Been running this one since it dropped in 2018 and it aged better than I expected. (random aside: the resistance splash art is genuinely one of the hardest splashes in the game for a non-Legendary)

Battle Bear Illaoi is the newest and the most polarizing. Anima Squad theme. The tentacles are bear-shaped. Cute. Some people love it, some people think it clashes with Illaoi's whole identity as this imposing priestess. Kinda feels like Riot wanted to give her a lighter tone for once. The VFX are solid for 1350 RP but I keep coming back to Cosmic Invoker after a few games.

Void Bringer sits at the bottom. Not because it's bad but because it's from 2015 and the particle work shows its age. The purple void aesthetic is cool in concept. In practice the tentacles just look like slightly recolored base tentacles with some void corruption. If you're climbing ranked in 2026 there's better options now.

Skinlines and Where Illaoi Fits

Five skins across five different skinlines. Curse of the Void, Battlecast (Resistance), Cosmic, Snow Moon, and Anima Squad. Riot never doubled down on one theme for Illaoi which honestly might be why her catalog feels scattered compared to champions who got three PROJECT skins or whatever.

The Cosmic line fits her best. Might be overthinking it but Illaoi's whole kit is about summoning otherworldly power through faith in Nagakabouros. Cosmic entities channeling the universe's power? Thematic slam dunk. The Snow Moon line also works because the spiritual warrior angle maps cleanly onto her priestess identity.

Resistance is the outlier that somehow works. Mechanical tentacles on a spiritual champion sounds wrong on paper. In game it reads as "big woman with big metal arms hits you really hard" and that's basically Illaoi's gameplay loop anyway. Fair warning, the Battlecast/Resistance skinline has gotten crowded over the years and Illaoi is one of the better entries.

Anima Squad with Battle Bear is the newest direction. Season 14 release. The cute animal theme is about as far from Illaoi's base fantasy as possible but Riot's been experimenting with tonal contrast skins a lot lately. Some mains love it. Some pretend it doesnt exist. The tentacles being literal bear arms is either genius or cursed depending on who you ask in my ranked games.

Budget vs Premium: The Illaoi Special

This section basically writes itself. Every Illaoi skin is 1350 RP. There is no budget option. There is no premium option. Your cheapest Illaoi skin costs 1350 and your most expensive Illaoi skin costs 1350. Riot said "Epic tier, take it or leave it" and that was that.

No Legendary means no new voice lines on any skin. Base VO across the board. No new recall animations beyond what Epic tier provides. Honestly not gonna lie, an Illaoi Legendary would be one of the most hype skin releases Riot could do. New tentacle voice lines? Different Nagakabouros lore through VO? The potential is massive.

If I had to recommend one skin for someone who only wants to buy a single Illaoi cosmetic, Cosmic Invoker. Best VFX, best thematic fit, cleanest ability reads. 1350 RP well spent for mains. Snow Moon as the runner-up if you prefer cooler color tones over the cosmic purple. Both skins punch exactly at their weight class, nothing more nothing less, but Cosmic has a slight edge in how the tentacles read during chaotic teamfights.

Could be coping but I think the all-Epic catalog actually works in Illaoi's favor. No skin feels like a waste at that price point. Even Void Bringer from 2015 delivers enough visual change to justify 1350 if you really dig the void aesthetic. You're never overpaying for an Illaoi skin. Just wish there was more variety in the lineup after nine years.
