Best Fortnite Settings: Master Your Gameplay on Console and PC

Best Fortnite settings in: AgataSmurf article cover

The best Fortnite settings for competitive play on PC, per Epic’s own guide: Fullscreen, Vsync off, Performance rendering mode, unlimited frame rate, View Distance Near, Textures and Meshes Low, NVIDIA Reflex On + Boost, and mouse sensitivity around 5-10%. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the big one is 120 FPS mode with a 120 Hz display.

Best Fortnite settings for PC and console

Every value below comes from two official sources: Epic’s article “Fortnite on PC: Best settings for competitive play” and Epic Support’s 120 FPS guide for consoles. Where we add our own opinion, we say so. No made-up “pro configs” here (pro players change their settings constantly, and copying someone’s sensitivity rarely works anyway).

Best Fortnite settings for PC: display

Open the menu with Esc, click the gear icon and go to Video. Epic’s recommendations for the Display section:

Setting Value Why
Window Mode Fullscreen Lowest input lag
Resolution Your monitor’s native Many competitive players use 1920×1080
Vsync Off Less input lag; pair with FreeSync or G-Sync against tearing
Rendering Mode Performance Disables most rendering features to lighten CPU and GPU load
Frame Rate Limit Unlimited Match your refresh rate if you see tearing

Performance mode is the single biggest switch (it’s also the one most people skip). Epic describes it as disabling “most rendering features to reduce memory usage and lighten the load on CPU and GPU,” and on a mid-range PC the difference is obvious within one match.

Best Fortnite settings for graphics quality

With Performance mode on, Epic suggests View Distance Near, minimum 3D Resolution at 100%, and Textures and Meshes both on Low. Near view distance sounds risky, right? It isn’t. Epic notes that players stay clear and visible even at Near, while far-off scenery gets simpler.

If the frame rate still isn’t where you want it, lower 3D Resolution by 10% at a time until it is. In Advanced Graphics, turn on Show FPS so you can see what each change does, and set NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency to On + Boost if you have an NVIDIA card.

Setting Value
View Distance Near
3D Resolution 100% (drop by 10% steps if FPS is low)
Textures Low
Meshes Low
Show FPS On
NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency On + Boost

Best Fortnite audio settings

Two settings matter, and Epic recommends both. 3D Headphones On gives you the game’s own binaural audio, so footsteps and shots come from a direction rather than just left or right. Visualize Sound Effects On shows nearby sounds on a radial indicator around your crosshair.

Honestly, Visualize Sound Effects is underrated. Thing is, it looks like a crutch. It still helps anyone who plays without perfect headphones, or with the game music turned up, or in a noisy room where a chest’s hum gets lost.

Best Fortnite control settings

Epic’s control advice is about keeping common actions near WASD and the mouse:

  • Bind wall, floor, stairs and roof to keys or mouse buttons you can reach without moving your hand.
  • Simple Build: look up or down for stairs on primary input, forward for a wall on secondary.
  • Turn on Simple Edit, so one press edits a piece based on where your crosshair points.
  • Put Edit on F.
  • Mouse X and Y sensitivity somewhere in the 5-10% range, under Mouse and Keyboard > Mouse Sensitivity.
  • Game > Movement > Toggle Sprint Off, which makes sprinting the default.

Test new binds before a real match. Epic suggests Creative islands or Arena Boxfights, a close-quarters mode for up to 16 players, solo or in teams of two. In practice, a week of boxfights does more for a new layout than any settings page (ours included).

How do you get 120 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?

You need a 120 Hz display. Save the World is also unavailable while Performance mode is on (Epic flags this at the top of its support page). After that, it’s a console setting plus one in-game toggle.

Console Console setting first Then in Fortnite
Xbox Series X|S Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Refresh Rate > 120 Hz Settings > Video > 120 FPS mode On > Apply
PlayStation 5 Settings > Save Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets > Performance Mode Settings > Video > 120 FPS mode On > Apply

Close Fortnite fully before changing the Xbox refresh rate. And if the 120 FPS toggle simply isn’t there, Epic’s support page is blunt: it isn’t available on your setup. On PS5, Epic also warns that Performance Mode may change your output resolution if your TV doesn’t support 4K at 120 Hz.

What about controller settings?

To be fair, Epic’s guide covers PC only. Epic hasn’t published an official “best controller settings” list. So the honest answer for controller players is to start from defaults, raise look sensitivity one step at a time, and turn on Use Advanced Options only when you’re ready to tune dead zones and acceleration yourself. That part is our advice, not Epic’s.

Do the best Fortnite settings change between seasons?

The menu layout shifts now and then, but these toggles have stayed put through recent seasons. Our list of every Fortnite season shows how often big updates land, and the Fortnite weapon tier list covers what to carry once your setup feels right. Playing other games too? We have a similar breakdown of the best League of Legends settings. For the best Fortnite settings, start with Epic’s list above, then change one thing at a time and watch your FPS counter.

FAQ

Performance mode. Epic recommends it for competitive play because it disables most rendering features to reduce memory use and CPU and GPU load.

Should Vsync be on or off in Fortnite?

What view distance should I use?

Near. Epic notes that players stay clearly visible even when View Distance is set to Near.

What mouse sensitivity does Epic recommend?

Epic suggests X and Y-axis mouse sensitivity in the 5-10% range, adjusted to your own mouse and preference.

How do I turn on 120 FPS in Fortnite on PS5?

Set Game Presets to Performance Mode in the PS5 settings, then turn on 120 FPS mode under Settings, Video in Fortnite and click Apply. You need a 120 Hz display.

Does 120 FPS mode affect Save the World?

Yes. Epic notes that Save the World is unavailable while Performance mode is enabled on console.
