First time I saw Warlord Shen in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. The armor design looks like it belongs in a different game entirely, something closer to feudal Japan war epics than the usual Shen aesthetic. Been maining Shen on and off since season 4 and this one caught me off guard when I finally picked it up last March around midnight after a rough loss streak.
What Warlord Shen actually changes
So this is a Standard tier skin at 975 RP. Temper expectations. You get a full model swap with Shen decked out in ornate samurai-style plate armor, a big horned helmet, and a redesigned spirit blade. The color palette shifts to deep reds and golds which honestly pops harder than base Shen’s blue and grey. Not gonna lie, the silhouette reads differently in lane. Bulkier. More intimidating when you’re standing in the wave zoning their ADC off cs.
No new VFX on this one. Your Q, W, E, R all look the same as default Shen. Voice lines stay base too. Keith Silverstein’s VO carries through unchanged. The recall animation is standard. For 975 RP thats about what you’d expect from a 2012 release. Riot wasnt exactly handing out custom particles back then for anything below Legendary.
Where it shines is purely the model work. The blade spirit that follows Shen around gets a visual update that matches the warlord theme. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animations feel slightly different with the new sword model, even though mechanically nothing changed. Placebo or not, it felt cleaner when I was last-hitting under tower in a Diamond game last Tuesday.
The Legacy line and some history
Warlord Shen dropped April 17, 2012. Pre-rework Shen, actually. Mist XG handled the artwork and the splash holds up surprisingly well for something over a decade old. The composition is tight. Shen standing in what looks like a burning battlefield, blade drawn. (Random aside: I used this splash as my Discord avatar for like three months straight.)
Part of the Legacy skinline. Shop has it at 975 RP which is permanent availability. Season 2 era skin that survived the rework and came out looking better for it honestly.
8 chromas total if you want variety. Obsidian is the standout for me, turns the whole armor set dark and menacing which fits the warlord fantasy way harder than base. Tanzanite gives you this deep purple samurai look that I think reads cleaner in teamfights. Ruby exists too but red-on-red with the base skin already being warm toned feels redundant.
Should you pick up Warlord Shen?
Real verdict: if you play Shen in ranked and want something that looks premium without dropping Legendary money, this is your pick. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The model quality punches above its weight class for a Standard skin. Been running this in my Shen rotation alongside Pulsefire and I keep coming back to Warlord specifically for the top lane splitpush games where you need to look like you mean business.
Might be overthinking it but there’s something about the warlord armor that makes engaging with E feel more satisfying. Pure vibes. No gameplay advantage obviously. Seen maybe 5 of these in my games all season which is a shame because it deserves more play. If you’re a Shen one-trick this belongs in your collection. If you play him occasionally, still worth grabbing next time you see it on sale. Skip it only if you already own Pulsefire or PsyOps and dont need another Shen skin in the drawer.
