First time I saw Soulhunter Kayn in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. The whole vibe is so different from base Kayn that it caught me off guard. Played against one in a Diamond ranked game back in season 7 right after launch, and the guy was styling on our backline. Had to cop it myself that same night.
What Soulhunter Kayn actually brings to the table
So this is Kayn’s release skin, dropped alongside the champion itself on July 11, 2017. For an Epic tier at 1350 RP, it does what you’d expect: new VFX across the board and a fresh recall animation. Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Thats fine for the price point honestly.
The Q feels different. Not gameplay different obviously, but the visual read on Reaping Slash has this ghostly teal energy that cuts cleaner than the base red-and-purple. W poke in Shadow Assassin form gets a similar treatment. Spectral green-blue wave that reads well against the Rift. Been running this in Diamond for a couple seasons now and the ability clarity is solid even in messy teamfights where you’ve got four different particle effects overlapping.
The R is where Soulhunter Kayn separates itself. Umbral Trespass gets this haunted soul-ripping animation that fits the skin fantasy perfectly. You dive their carry, press R, and the visual feedback just hits different compared to base. Could be wrong here but I think the shadow trail on E wallpass also looks slightly more refined. Maybe placebo.
Recall animation has Kayn channeling souls through Rhaast. Short and punchy. Nothing crazy elaborate like some Legendary recalls but it works for what it is.
Both transforms look good. Shadow Assassin form leans into the spectral hunter aesthetic hard. Rhaast form keeps the soul theme but goes heavier on the demonic energy. I personally prefer Shadow Assassin Soulhunter over Rhaast Soulhunter, the teal VFX pop more on the assassin kit. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to go Rhaast in this skin because he says the colors clash with his chroma collection on other champs, which makes zero sense but whatever.)
The Bilgewater connection and release context
Soulhunter Kayn sits in the Bilgewater: Curse of the Drowned skinline. Might be overthinking it but the skin doesn’t scream “pirate” to me the way other Bilgewater skins do. It’s more of a spectral bounty hunter pulling souls from the cursed waters. The skinline connection is loose at best. Real talk though, that works in its favor. Kayn doesn’t need a tricorn hat and a parrot.
Jean “Curing” Go handled the artwork on the splash. They captured something interesting with the composition, Kayn mid-harvest with souls swirling around Rhaast. The color palette leans cold: blues, teals, that sickly green glow. It reads well as a thumbnail in the shop and the full resolution version holds up.
No chromas available for Soulhunter Kayn. Zero. For a 2017 Epic skin this isnt surprising, Riot wasn’t handing out chroma packs like candy back then. Season 7 era, pre-6 chroma explosion. Would I buy a dark red variant if they dropped one? Probably. But I’m not losing sleep over it.
Available any time in the shop. 1350 RP, standard Epic pricing. Not locked behind any vault rotation or event pass.
How it stacks up against other Kayn skins
Here’s the thing about Kayn’s skin pool. Nightbringer exists. Heartsteel exists. Battle Academia exists. Soulhunter came first and it shows in the scope. No new voice lines, no transforming gimmicks beyond the standard form swap, no elaborate thematic universe tie-in. It’s a clean Epic skin from 2017.
Played maybe 150 games on Soulhunter specifically and I keep coming back to it over flashier options sometimes. Not gonna lie, there’s something about the simpler VFX that makes jungle clear feel smoother. Less visual noise when you’re speed-farming raptors at 2 AM on a Tuesday trying to hit your item spike before scuttle spawns. The teal particles don’t compete with camp health bars the way Nightbringer’s heavy effects can.
For one-tricks who rotate skins based on mood, Soulhunter Kayn fills the “understated but clean” slot. It’s not your lock-in-for-the-highlight-reel skin. It’s your “I’m grinding ranked and I want my abilities to read fast” skin.
The honest take
1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Not overpriced, not a steal. If Kayn is your main jungler and you’re climbing through Diamond or wherever, Soulhunter is a solid pickup that won’t distract you from the game. Best executed of the original Kayn cosmetics simply because it was the only one for two years.
Skip this if you already own Nightbringer and only play Kayn occasionally. But for Kayn mains building the full collection, Soulhunter earns its spot. The spectral aesthetic aged well, the VFX are readable in lane and in teamfights, and the splash still goes hard seven years later. Not the flashiest Kayn skin in 2026 but sometimes clean beats loud. Worth 1350 if you main Kayn, no question.
