Thunder Lord Skins
All 2 skins in the Thunder Lord skinline. Browse splash art, chromas, and detailed reviews for every Thunder Lord skin in League of Legends.
Thunder Lord is one of those skinlines that flew under everybody's radar for years and I think thats partly because it only has two skins total. Two. Volibear got his back in 2011 when Riot was still figuring out what a "skinline" even meant, and then Ornn dropped in 2017 with a proper Epic treatment. The whole concept is Norse storm gods channeling raw lightning, fur cloaks, heavy armor, thunder cracking across the Rift. Honestly not gonna lie, for a line this small it punches way above its weight. Been a fan of both these skins since I started climbing ranked and the thunder aesthetic just hits different when you're playing frontline engage champions.
What Makes Thunder Lord Stand Out on the Rift
Not sure if it's just me but the Thunder Lord line has this specific visual identity that you don't really see replicated anywhere else in League. The closest comparison might be Freljord skins or maybe Woad, but Thunder Lord leans harder into the "ancient storm deity" angle. Heavy plate armor with fur trim, lightning motifs everywhere, dark stormy color palettes with electric blue and gold accents. It reads like a Viking warlord who figured out how to channel actual thunder.
The splash arts tell the story better than I can. Volibear's original Thunder Lord splash is dated by today's standards, sure, but it established the vibe. Massive armored bear standing in a storm, lightning arcing off his claws. Ornn's splash though? That one goes hard. (Random aside: I used Ornn's Thunder Lord splash as my desktop background for like three months straight in season 8.) The detail on the anvil, the storm clouds, the molten metal cooling in the rain. Riot stepped up the production quality between 2011 and 2017 and it shows.
Color palette is consistent across both skins. Deep gunmetal grays, electric blues, touches of gold on the armor plating. The VFX on Ornn's version integrate the thunder theme into his abilities, which is what you want from an Epic tier skin. Volibear's Standard tier version is more of a model swap with recolored textures, but for 520 RP back in 2011 that was standard practice. No new particles on the older one. Voice lines stay base on both skins too.
What ties the line together conceptually is the Nordic mythology angle. Riot has explored Norse themes in other places, Olaf's entire kit, Freljord champion designs, but Thunder Lord specifically takes the "god of storms" fantasy and applies it as a cosmetic layer. Kinda feels like the skinline was designed for champions who already have that primal elemental energy baked into their base kits. Volibear is literally a thunder bear demigod. Ornn forges in fire and lightning. The theme doesn't have to stretch to fit them.
Best Thunder Lord Skins Ranked
With only two skins this is a short list but I'll give you the honest breakdown from someone who's played both extensively in Diamond games.
Thunder Lord Ornn takes the top spot. Not even close. This is the skin that showed Riot could do something special with Ornn's kit if they actually tried. The 1350 RP Epic tier treatment gives him new particles on his Q, W, E, and R. The Bellows Breath W specifically looks incredible with the thunder effects replacing the standard fire. His ult call, where he summons the massive ram? With Thunder Lord equipped it feels like you're calling down an actual storm across the lane. Played maybe 150 games with this skin across season 8 and 9, and the R knockup animation with the lightning crackle still gets me hyped in teamfights.
The recall animation deserves its own mention. Ornn hammering at his anvil while lightning strikes around him. Clean execution. Simple concept. It works because it doesn't try to be flashy for the sake of being flashy, it just fits the character.
Thunder Lord Volibear sits at number two by default but that doesn't mean its bad. For a 520 RP Standard skin from 2011, the model changes are solid. Heavier armor plating, the fur cloak, the helmet design. Could be wrong here but I think this was one of the better budget skins Volibear had before his rework in 2020. Post-rework the skin got updated to match his new model and the Thunder Lord armor translates surprisingly well onto the reworked design. No new VFX or animations, base voice lines, but the visual identity holds up. Been running this in ARAM when I dont feel like spending on his pricier options.
Real talk though, if you main either of these champions and you're looking for the Thunder Lord aesthetic, Ornn's version is the one worth your RP. Volibear has better skins at higher price points. Ornn's Thunder Lord competes with his entire catalog.
Champion Roster and Who Should Join
Two champions. That's it. Volibear and Ornn. Smallest skinline roster you'll find in League outside of some one-off legendaries and DJ Sona type situations.
Both picks make perfect thematic sense though. Volibear is the Freljord's storm bear, a literal demigod of thunder in the lore. Giving him a Thunder Lord skin is almost redundant, like yeah, he IS a thunder lord. But the armor and the Norse visual treatment differentiates it enough from his base design to justify existing. Ornn is the Freljord's fire and forge god, and the connection to storms and lightning through smithing mythology is a natural extension. Thor's hammer. Ornn's hammer. The parallel writes itself.
Now here's where I get opinionated. This skinline needs more members. Two skins across six years (2011 to 2017) and then nothing? Riot left this on the table.
Champions who should get Thunder Lord skins, in my opinion: Udyr post-rework would be perfect, especially his R stance channeling lightning. (Sidebar for Udyr mains specifically: imagine Thunder Lord Udyr with storm effects on every stance swap. You know that would sell.) Sejuani riding a thunder boar instead of Bristle? Easy money. Trundle with a lightning ice pillar. Even Braum with a thunder shield could work. The Freljord roster is sitting right there and Riot just hasn't pulled the trigger.
Maybe just my experience but every time I see a Thunder Lord skin in my ranked games people comment on it. The aesthetic resonates. Players like the Viking storm god fantasy. Riot's sitting on a goldmine with this line and they keep making more Star Guardian skins instead. Not saying Star Guardian is bad but we have like 30 of those and two Thunder Lords. The math aint adding up.
Tier and Pricing Breakdown
Simple breakdown here. One Standard tier skin at 520 RP and one Epic tier skin at 1350 RP. That's your range.
Thunder Lord Volibear at 520 RP is legacy pricing from 2011. Shop has it. For the price you're getting a model swap, no new VFX, no new animations, base voice pack. Standard deal for that era. Fair price for what it is. Back when I started playing around season 4 or 5, 520 RP skins were the bread and butter of most champion skin collections. You werent expecting much and they delivered exactly what they promised.
Thunder Lord Ornn at 1350 RP is the real investment piece. New model, new VFX on all abilities, new recall animation. This is what 1350 RP should look like. Permanent shop availability. 1350 feels fair for what you get, especially on a champion like Ornn who doesn't have a massive skin catalog to choose from. When Ornn launched in 2017 this was his only non-base option for a while, and honestly it set a high bar that his later skins had to compete with.
No Legendary skins in the line. No Mythic or Prestige variants. No chromas on either skin. Straight up what you see is what you get. Not gonna lie, I respect that. Not every skinline needs eight chromas and a prestige edition. Sometimes a clean Epic with good VFX is enough. Thunder Lord Ornn proves that.
Price to quality ratio across the line is solid. You're spending a combined 1870 RP if you want both, which is less than a single Legendary skin. For two complete champion looks with a cohesive theme? Good deal. Took this into consideration last Tuesday when I was deciding between grabbing another Ornn skin or sticking with Thunder Lord. Kept Thunder Lord. The alternatives dont match the vibe.
Should Riot Expand the Thunder Lord Line?
Short answer: yes. Long answer: absolutely yes.
Riot has shown they can revisit dormant skinlines and breathe new life into them. Look at what they did with High Noon. That line started as cowboy Twisted Fate and cowboy Yasuo and evolved into this demon-infused Wild West universe with Legendaries and full events. Thunder Lord could get the same treatment. Not at that scale maybe, but a batch of 4-5 new Thunder Lord skins with a thematic event? That would sell.
The Norse mythology space in League is underexplored from a cosmetic standpoint. Freljord champions exist in the lore but their skin options tend to scatter across random skinlines. Sejuani gets Firecracker and Hextech and Bee skins. Udyr gets Spirit Guard and Primal. Why not consolidate the storm god fantasy into Thunder Lord and build it out properly?
Been thinking about this since like season 10 when Volibear got his rework and they updated Thunder Lord to fit his new model. That was the perfect moment to announce a Thunder Lord expansion. Three or four new skins dropping alongside the rework. Marketing writes itself. "The Thunder Lord rises, and he's bringing company." Instead we got nothing. Fair warning, I'm going to keep bringing this up in every Riot survey until they do something about it.
The competitive angle matters too. In my Diamond games I see way more variety in skin choice than people think. Players lock in skins that feel powerful, that match their champion's energy. Thunder Lord on Ornn in a ranked game feels like you mean business. It reads as serious. Thats worth something when you're trying to establish lane prio top and your opponent sees a storm god walking into lane.
Could be coping but I genuinely believe this line has top-10 potential if Riot expanded it to 6-8 champions with proper Epic and Legendary tiers. The foundation is there. The aesthetic is clean. The thematic space is rich. They just need to build on it.
Thunder Lord Skins FAQ
How many Thunder Lord skins are there?
Two Thunder Lord skins exist right now. Thunder Lord Volibear dropped in 2011 as a Standard 520 RP skin and Thunder Lord Ornn followed in 2017 as an Epic at 1350 RP. Smallest skinline roster you'll find in League basically. Been waiting for Riot to add more since season 8 but nothing yet. The line feels incomplete with just two champions honestly.
What is the best Thunder Lord skin?
Thunder Lord Ornn by a wide margin. The Epic tier treatment gives him new VFX on every ability, a solid recall animation, and the storm effects on his W and R look incredible in teamfights. Spammed this in ranked for two seasons straight. Volibear's version is fine for 520 RP but Ornn's skin is the one that actually delivers on the thunder god fantasy.
Which champions have Thunder Lord skins?
Just Volibear and Ornn. Both Freljord champions, both thematically perfect for the storm god aesthetic. Volibear got his in 2011, Ornn in 2017. Think Riot missed a huge opportunity not expanding the roster to include Sejuani, Udyr, or Braum. The Freljord lineup is right there waiting for Thunder Lord treatment.
Does Thunder Lord have Legendary skins?
No Legendary tier skins in the Thunder Lord line. The highest is Epic with Thunder Lord Ornn at 1350 RP. Volibear's sits at Standard 520 RP. Kinda feels like a Legendary Thunder Lord skin would be amazing though, imagine new voice lines with actual thunder god dialogue. Maybe if Riot ever revisits the line they'll go bigger on tier.
When did the Thunder Lord skinline release?
Thunder Lord Volibear came out in 2011, making it one of the older skinlines in League. Thunder Lord Ornn followed six years later in 2017 when Ornn launched as a new champion. The line has been dormant since then. Six years between the first and second skin, and now another seven plus years of silence. Riot works on their own timeline I guess.
Are Thunder Lord skins worth buying?
Thunder Lord Ornn is absolutely worth 1350 RP if you play Ornn in ranked. Top tier skin for the champion, strong VFX, great thematic fit. Volibear's version at 520 RP is harder to recommend because he has better options at higher price points now. But if you want the matching set or you're on a budget, its a decent pickup for the price.
Do Thunder Lord skins have chromas?
Neither Thunder Lord skin has chromas. Zero chroma options on Volibear or Ornn. What you see in the shop is what you get. Might be because the skins are older and Riot hasnt gone back to add chromas to legacy lines like this. Would love to see a gold and white Thunder Lord Ornn chroma someday but not holding my breath on that one.
Will Riot make more Thunder Lord skins?
No official announcements as of early 2026. The line has been dormant since 2017 which isnt a great sign. But Riot has revived older skinlines before, look at what happened with High Noon and Coven expansions. The Thunder Lord concept has real potential with Freljord champions like Udyr, Sejuani, and Braum. Could be wrong here but I think we'll see it eventually.
