Guardian of the Sands is one of those skinlines that flew under the radar for most players but honestly stuck with me since I first saw the Xerath skin back in season 5. The whole Egyptian tomb guardian aesthetic hits different when you're playing a mage or jungler that already feels ancient and powerful. Sand, gold, turquoise accents, scarab motifs. Riot took the desert fantasy and ran with it across 11 champions over about eight years, from 2012 all the way to 2020. Not every pick landed perfectly but the line has a visual identity thats hard to confuse with anything else on the Rift.

What Sets Guardian of the Sands Apart

The visual signature here is pretty clear: golden armor plating, sandy particle effects, and turquoise gemstone accents on every champion in the set. Think ancient Egyptian guardian statues come to life. The shared color palette ties everything together in a way that some skinlines (looking at you, random Infernal additions) never quite manage. When you load into a game and see Guardian of the Sands Skarner or Xerath, you know exactly what line they belong to before checking the loading screen.

Not gonna lie, the VFX work on the Epic tier skins carries this line hard. Xerath's abilities turning into golden sand beams? Chef's kiss. Skarner's crystal scorpion fantasy getting a full desert tomb rework? Perfect thematic fit. The particle effects lean into sand and dust consistently across every skin, which gives teamfights this cool unified look if you somehow get three Guardian of the Sands picks in one comp.

Compared to similar "ancient power" skinlines like Arclight or Risen Legends, Guardian of the Sands feels more grounded. Arclight goes full divine energy beams and angelic wings. Guardian keeps it earthy. Sand, stone, gold. The splash arts reflect this too. Most of them feature tomb interiors or desert landscapes with that warm amber lighting. Feels cohesive in a way Riot doesn't always achieve.

(Random aside: I used the Xerath splash as my desktop wallpaper for like six months in 2015. The turquoise energy against the gold just looked clean on a dual monitor setup.)

Where it falls short compared to newer lines is animation quality. These are mostly 2014-2017 era skins, so you're not getting the custom recalls and homeguard animations that modern Epic skins ship with. The Standard tier ones especially show their age. But the core model work and VFX hold up better than you'd expect for skins pushing eight-plus years old.

Best Guardian of the Sands Skins

Guardian of the Sands Xerath is the standout. Full stop. Been spamming Xerath in Diamond since season 8 and this skin is still my go-to over Dark Star and Arcana. The sand particle effects on his Q and R feel slightly more readable than base, which sounds like copium but I swear the visual clarity is better. The golden energy beams replacing his usual blue lightning give every ability this weight that base Xerath lacks. At 1350 RP its a steal for how much the skin transforms the champion.

Guardian of the Sands Skarner is the sleeper pick of the line. Skarner already has the crystal scorpion thing going on, so turning those crystals into ancient desert relics? Natural fit. Could be wrong here but I think this is still his best skin even after the rework adjusted how some of the older skins look. The sand trail on his movement and the golden stun particles just work. Played maybe 30 games of Skarner jungle last season specifically because this skin made me want to lock him in.

Risen Fiddlesticks deserves a mention even though it technically uses "Risen" in the name instead of the full Guardian of the Sands prefix. The scarecrow wrapped in burial linens with that glowing turquoise eye is genuinely creepy in a different way than base Fiddle. His ult dropping sand and gold particles instead of crows changes the whole feel of a teamfight. Engage on the backline with this skin active and it looks like a sandstorm hit bot lane.

Guardian of the Sands Janna rounds out my top picks. Wind and sand is such an obvious pairing that I'm surprised it took Riot until 2015 to make it happen. Her tornado becoming a sand cyclone and the shield getting that golden overlay makes her feel like a desert goddess instead of a generic wind mage. Solid Epic skin that I still see Janna mains running in my ranked games.

Ryze is decent but not top tier within the line. The sand scroll aesthetic works thematically but Ryze has so many skins at this point that Guardian gets lost in the shuffle. Kinda feels like he was added to the line because Riot needed another mage and not because the fit was perfect.

The Champion Roster

Eleven champions across the full run. Xerath, Skarner, Rammus, and Janna were the early core and honestly the best thematic fits. Desert guardians protecting ancient tombs. Makes sense for a scorpion, an armadillo that rolls through sand, a wind spirit, and a being made of arcane energy.

Kha'Zix and Rengar getting paired Guardian of the Sands skins was a nice touch given their rivalry lore. Not sure if it's just me but the Rengar skin feels a bit forced though. Big cat hunter in Egyptian armor reads more like a Halloween costume than a natural thematic extension. Kha'Zix works better since the insectoid body translates well to a scarab guardian look.

Sandstorm Katarina and Sandstorm Ekko use the variant naming, and they're the weaker entries. Katarina already has dozens of skins that do the "assassin in cool outfit" thing better. Ekko's time manipulation getting a sand theme is an interesting idea on paper but the execution at 975 RP doesn't quite deliver on the promise. Sand Wraith Pyke was the last addition in 2020 and honestly one of the better late entries. Pyke's underwater horror aesthetic translating into desert horror works surprisingly well.

Who should Riot add next? Azir is the obvious answer and its kind of wild he doesnt have one already. The emperor of Shurima not being in the sand guardian skinline is a massive oversight. Nasus too. Maybe even Sivir or Renekton. The Shurima roster is right there, Riot. (Sidebar: I've been saying this since like season 6 and at this point I think they just forgot the line exists.)

Fiddlesticks getting the "Risen" variant name was a good call. Scarecrow wrapped in ancient burial cloth fits the horror-adjacent corner of the theme without breaking the golden guardian aesthetic.

Tier and Price Breakdown

Seven Epics at 1350 RP and four Standards at 975 RP. No Legendaries. No Mythics. No Ultimates. This is a pure mid-tier skinline and honestly thats fine. The Epics deliver solid model and VFX changes for the price. The Standards show their age more obviously but 975 RP for a desert-themed champion model swap is reasonable enough.

Real talk though, the lack of a Legendary anchor skin holds this line back. Imagine a 1820 RP Guardian of the Sands Azir with new voice lines about protecting the ancient tomb. Custom interactions with Shuriman champions. New recall animation of him raising sand soldiers from burial chambers. That skin would carry the entire line into relevance. Instead we got 11 skins in the 975-1350 range and Riot moved on.

Price range of 975 to 1350 RP means you can grab any skin in the line without feeling like you overspent. Fair enough. The Epics are worth the 1350 especially Xerath and Skarner. The 975 skins are harder to recommend in 2026 when Epic quality has jumped so far ahead, but if you're a one-trick on Rammus or Katarina and the theme speaks to you, the price isnt painful.

Might be overthinking it but I think this skinline peaked around 2015-2017 with the Xerath, Skarner, and Janna releases. The later additions felt more like "throw another champion in the sand theme" rather than careful thematic expansion. Still, 11 skins total across eight years isn't bad for a line that never got a big event or cinematic push.

Guardian of the Sands FAQ

How many Guardian of the Sands skins are there?

11 skins total if you count the variant names like Sandstorm Katarina, Sandstorm Ekko, Sand Wraith Pyke, and Risen Fiddlesticks. The core "Guardian of the Sands" prefix covers Xerath, Skarner, Rammus, Janna, Ryze, Rengar, and Kha'Zix. Been playing since season 4 and I remember when it was just three or four of them. Line grew slowly over eight years from 2012 to 2020.

What is the best Guardian of the Sands skin?

Guardian of the Sands Xerath. Not even close in my opinion. The golden sand beams replacing his base abilities look clean and the VFX clarity actually feels better than default. Skarner is second, Risen Fiddlesticks third. Locked in Xerath with this skin for maybe 200 ranked games and never got tired of the particles. At 1350 RP the value is hard to beat.

Which champions have Guardian of the Sands skins?

Xerath, Skarner, Rammus, Janna, Ryze, Rengar, Kha'Zix under the main name. Then Sandstorm Katarina, Sandstorm Ekko, Sand Wraith Pyke, and Risen Fiddlesticks as variant names in the same thematic line. Eleven champions total. Honestly not gonna lie, I keep forgetting Rammus is in the line because you almost never see it in ranked games.

Does Guardian of the Sands have Legendary skins?

No Legendaries at all. The line tops out at Epic tier with seven skins at 1350 RP and four Standard skins at 975 RP. Biggest missed opportunity in the whole line if you ask me. A Legendary Guardian of the Sands Azir with custom voice lines would have been perfect. Riot just never pulled the trigger on it.

When did the Guardian of the Sands skinline release?

First skins dropped in 2012, last one was Sand Wraith Pyke in 2020. The line ran for about eight years with new additions every year or two. Peak era was 2014-2017 when Xerath, Skarner, Janna, and Kha'Zix got theirs. Feels like a lifetime ago in League years. Season 5 launch window for the best ones.

Are Guardian of the Sands skins worth buying?

The Epics are solid buys if you main the champion. Xerath and Skarner specifically punch above their weight for 1350 RP. The 975 Standards are harder to recommend in 2026 since skin quality has jumped so much. Maybe just my experience but I still lock in Guardian of the Sands Xerath over his newer options. For the others, check if the champion has a more recent skin first.

Do Guardian of the Sands skins have chromas?

Most of the older Guardian of the Sands skins launched before chromas were standard. Some of the later Epic entries picked up chroma sets but the early 2012-2015 skins mostly don't have them. Check the individual skin pages for specific chroma counts. Riot hasnt gone back to add chromas to the older ones which is a shame since the gold and turquoise base would look great in alternate colorways.

Will Riot make more Guardian of the Sands skins?

Last addition was 2020 so the line has been dormant for six years now. Could be wrong here but I think Riot considers it a finished line at this point. They tend to cycle through newer themes like Empyrean and Faerie Court instead of revisiting older ones. Would love to be wrong though because Azir and Nasus in this line would be instant buys for me.
