Karthus Skins

10 skins available

Karthus has one of those skin catalogs that flies under the radar for most players. Ten skins spanning 13 years, zero Legendaries, and somehow a few of them still hit harder than half the prestige skins in the game. Been a Karthus player on and off since season 3, mostly as a mid laner but occasionally jungle when the AP ratios get buffed. His collection isnt flashy on paper but there's genuine quality hiding in here if you know where to look.

How Karthus Built His Skin Shelf Over 13 Years

Ten skins total. Six Standards, four Epics. No Legendary, no Ultimate, no Prestige. For a champion who's been in the game since beta, thats a pretty thin roster. Compare that to someone like Lux or Ezreal and it looks almost neglected. But Karthus has never been a popular pick in the traditional sense. He's a niche champion with a dedicated player base, and Riot's skin output reflects that.

The oldest skin in the lineup is Grim Reaper Karthus, dating back to 2010. Classic era stuff. The newest is Elderwood Karthus from 2023. So we're looking at over a decade of cosmetic evolution, and you can really see the quality gap between the early skins and the later ones. Not gonna lie, the jump from something like Statue of Karthus to Infernal Karthus is night and day.

Karthus went through a long dry spell in the middle there. Could be wrong here but I think between Pentakill and Karthus Lightsbane there was a multi-year gap where mains just had to wait. Riot wasn't exactly prioritizing the Deathsinger for new cosmetics. Then the Epic tier skins started dropping and the catalog finally got some real entries worth caring about.

Four Epics at 1350 RP each. That's where the actual money skins live for Karthus. Infernal, Pentakill III: Lost Chapter, Elderwood, and Arcana. Every single one of them changes particles, adds new SFX, gives the champion a distinct visual identity. The Standard skins are fine for what they are but they're texture swaps from an older era. Different expectations back then.

No Legendary means no new voice lines on any skin. Bit of a shame honestly. Karthus has one of the more iconic voice kits in the game and hearing a reimagined version through Pentakill or Infernal would've been something special. Maybe someday. Feels like Riot owes him one at this point.

Best Karthus Skins Worth Your RP

Infernal Karthus. Full stop. This is the skin that made me actually commit to learning him in ranked back in season 9 or maybe 10, dont remember exactly. The fire VFX on his Q - Lay Waste - are clean and readable in teamfights. Every single Q proc lights up the ground with these lava cracks that look distinct from the base green circles. His W, Wall of Pain, becomes this wall of molten rock. His E, Defile, turns into a spinning fire aura that actually looks threatening. And the ult? Requiem drops fire from the sky on every enemy champion and the channel animation with the flames spiraling up is genuinely one of the better ult visuals for any mage.

Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus comes in close second. The whole Lost Chapter skinline was a love letter to the Pentakill fantasy and Karthus being the vocalist makes this one feel canon. Played maybe 60 games with this one last season in Diamond. The recall animation is a highlight. Purple and black color palette works well on the Rift, never had visibility issues with abilities. His Q reads clearly against the dark ground textures in river specifically.

Elderwood Karthus surprised me. Honest take. Wasn't expecting much when it dropped in 2023 but the nature-themed particles on his kit translate well. The green and gold tones on his Q feel organic, and his ult channel has this ethereal forest energy that's hard to describe without seeing it. (Random aside: my duo partner who's a Karthus one-trick called this his favorite skin the day it released and hasn't switched since.) Kinda feels like Riot's art team had something to prove with this one because the attention to detail on the ability VFX is above what you'd expect for a 1350 RP skin.

Arcana Karthus rounds out the Epic tier. Tarot card aesthetic. Clean ability effects with the red and gold color scheme. Not as striking as Infernal in my experience but it holds its own. Good variety pick when you want something different.

Phantom Karthus deserves a mention as the budget pick. Standard tier, 460 RP, and it gives him a spectral blue look that honestly fits his thematic better than the base skin in some ways. No new particles or anything but the model change is solid for the price. Been using it as my "tryhard without trying to look tryhard" skin in ranked. Works.

Where Karthus Fits in Riot's Skinlines

Karthus shows up in more skinlines than you'd expect for a champion with only 10 skins. Pentakill is the obvious one. He's the vocalist of the band. Two Pentakill skins - the original and the Lost Chapter version. The Pentakill fantasy is basically built around him and Mordekaiser. Playing Karthus in a Pentakill skin with a Pentakill Mordekaiser on your team in bot lane? Chef's kiss. Done it twice in ranked. Both times we won.

Infernal is another big one. The fire theme fits Karthus surprisingly well considering he's supposed to be this undead lich. But his kit is all about area damage and passive zoning, and fire communicates that visually better than most themes could. Might be overthinking it but I think Infernal Karthus works because fire is inherently threatening and Karthus wants you to be scared of standing near him.

Elderwood brought him into the nature/fey aesthetic. It works because Karthus is already associated with death, and Elderwood has that dark fairy tale vibe where beauty and decay mix together. The Trick-or-Treat connection through Grim Reaper gives him a seasonal angle too, though that skin is Legacy vault now so you cant just grab it whenever.

Fnatic Karthus exists as a World Champions 2011 skin. Cool piece of esports history. Not a great skin by modern standards but its a time capsule. (Sidebar for anyone who remembers: xPeke on Karthus was something else back then.) The Rift Quest and Wonders of the World skinlines cover the remaining entries with Karthus Lightsbane and Statue of Karthus respectively. Niche picks. Fun for variety but not what you'd main.

Spending Smart on Karthus Cosmetics

Here's the thing with Karthus. No Legendary tier means your maximum spend per skin is 1350 RP. That's actually a positive for your wallet. The four Epics are all priced the same and they're all genuinely good. You're not paying Legendary tax for any of them.

Best value? Phantom Karthus at 460 RP. Not close. The model change gives you a completely different look for less than half the price of an Epic. No new particles, no new SFX, but if you're climbing ranked and want something that isn't the default skin, Phantom does the job. Been running it in my alt account games since like last March and its fine.

If you want the full experience though, Infernal at 1350 RP is the move. New particles on every ability, recall animation, SFX overhaul. For a champion who lives and dies by his ability visuals - Q spam in lane, E toggle in teamfights, R channel across the map - having distinct readable particles matters more than on most champions. Real talk though, any of the four Epics will serve you well. Pentakill III if you like the music fantasy, Elderwood if you want something newer, Arcana for the dark mystical vibe.

The Standard skins (Grim Reaper, Statue, Pentakill original, Fnatic, Karthus Lightsbane) are all products of their era. Texture changes, maybe a minor model adjustment. They range from 460 to 975 RP. Not bad for collectors but not where modern Karthus mains should be spending unless there's a specific sentimental attachment. Played one ranked game last Tuesday with Statue of Karthus and it felt like stepping back in time. Nostalgic but not competitive with the Epics visually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Karthus have?

Ten skins total as of 2023. Six Standard tier and four Epic. Not the biggest collection for a champion who's been around since beta but there's quality in there. Phantom and Grim Reaper date back to 2010, Elderwood dropped in 2023. Decent spread across 13 years honestly.

What is the best Karthus skin?

Infernal Karthus. Not gonna lie, been saying this since it dropped. Fire VFX on Q and R are clean, readable in teamfights, and the whole package at 1350 RP is hard to beat. Pentakill III: Lost Chapter is a close second if you prefer the rock aesthetic. Both are S-tier for him.

What is the cheapest Karthus skin?

Phantom Karthus at 460 RP. Solid model change, spectral blue look that fits his undead vibe. No new particles or SFX but for the price its a steal. Best budget option for Karthus mains who want variety without dropping 1350 on an Epic.

Does Karthus have a Legendary skin?

No. Zero Legendaries. His highest tier is Epic at 1350 RP, and he has four of those. Kinda disappointing for a champion with his history and unique kit. A Legendary with new voice lines would be incredible but Riot hasnt pulled the trigger yet. Maybe someday.

What skinlines is Karthus in?

Pentakill is the big one, two skins there. Also shows up in Infernal, Elderwood, Arcana, Trick-or-Treat (Grim Reaper), Rift Quest (Lightsbane), Wonders of the World (Statue), and the Fnatic World Champions 2011 line. Spread across a bunch of themes. Pentakill fits him best though.

Does Karthus have chromas?

Some of his Epic skins have chromas available. Infernal and the newer releases picked up chroma sets. Worth checking the store for current availability. The chromas add nice color variety if you already own the base skin and want to mix it up in your ranked games.

When was Karthus's last skin released?

Elderwood Karthus in 2023. Before that it was a bit of a wait. The Deathsinger isnt exactly first in line when Riot's planning skin releases. Ten skins across 13 years works out to roughly one every 16 months on average. Slow but they've been good quality lately.

Is Karthus worth buying skins for?

If you play him regularly, absolutely. His kit is all about ability VFX - Q spam, E toggle, global R - so new particles actually change how the champion feels in game. Infernal or Pentakill III at 1350 RP are solid investments. Even Phantom at 460 RP is worth it for a quick upgrade from the base model.
