Hwei Skins

2 skins available

Hwei's skin catalog is tiny right now and honestly thats part of what makes it interesting. Two skins total for one of the most mechanically complex mages Riot has dropped in years. Been playing him since release in my Diamond games and the base model already looks clean, so the bar for his cosmetics was high from day one. Both skins landed in strong skinlines though, so there's quality over quantity here. Not gonna lie, I expected more by now given how popular he got in mid lane and support, but Riot moves at their own pace with newer champions.

Hwei's Skin Collection So Far

Two skins. That's it. Winterblessed Hwei and Spirit Blossom Hwei, both sitting at Epic tier. For a champion released in December 2023, having two cosmetics isn't exactly surprising. Riot usually ships a launch skin and then follows up within the first year or so. The thing is, both of these landed in premium skinlines that Riot clearly invests real effort into.

Winterblessed dropped alongside his release. Spirit Blossom came later and honestly felt like Riot knew what they were doing picking that line for an artist champion. Could be wrong here but I think Hwei's kit with all the painting animations just naturally fits thematic skinlines better than generic battle skins would. Every ability he casts has that brush-stroke feel, and skinlines that lean into fantasy or artistic themes play into that strength hard.

No Legendaries yet. No Mythics. No budget options either since both sit at 1350 RP. Kinda feels like you either pay full Epic price or you stick with base Hwei. Which, again, base Hwei looks good enough that plenty of mains dont even bother. Seen it constantly in ranked. People lock in Hwei with the default skin and it still reads well on the Rift.

The year range is just 2023 for both, so we're looking at a champion whose cosmetic history is basically a single year snapshot. Compare that to someone like Lux or Ezreal with skins spanning over a decade. Hwei's catalog will grow, but right now it's a two-horse race. Simple as that.

Best Skins for Hwei

With only two options this section writes itself, but there's still a clear winner in my eyes.

Spirit Blossom Hwei is the better skin. Full stop. The thematic fit between Hwei's painter fantasy and the Spirit Blossom aesthetic is almost too perfect. His Q abilities get these ethereal petal effects that look incredible in teamfights. The W shield and zone spells pick up soft pinks and purples that read cleanly without being distracting. And his R - the ult - gets this blooming flower explosion on the tether that actually made me double-take the first time I saw it in game. Not sure if it's just me but the Spirit Blossom version of his E abilities feels smoother to track visually too. The molten paint effects from base get replaced with spirit energy that flows more naturally across the ground.

(Random aside: Hwei might be the single best champion design for the Spirit Blossom line because he literally paints his abilities into existence and the whole skinline is about spiritual art and nature. Whoever pitched this at Riot deserves a raise.)

Winterblessed Hwei is solid but not spectacular. It was his launch skin so expectations were tempered. The icy blue palette works fine on his abilities. His Q spells get frost particles, W abilities have snowflake accents, E gets cold trails. Standard winter theme stuff. Been running this in ranked for a while after his release back in December 2023 and it felt clean enough. The recall animation where he paints a winter scene is a nice touch. But compared to Spirit Blossom it just doesn't hit the same highs.

Real talk though - both skins change his ability VFX meaningfully because Hwei has so many individual spell casts (QQ, QW, QE, WQ, WW, WE, EQ, EW, EE plus R) that each skin essentially needs to reskin like 10 different abilities. That's a lot of visual work for an Epic skin. Respect to Riot's VFX team on both of these.

If you're forcing me to rank them: Spirit Blossom first, Winterblessed second. And base Hwei honestly isn't far behind Winterblessed, which says something about the quality of his default model.

Skinlines and Themes That Fit Hwei

Winterblessed and Spirit Blossom are both strong skinline picks. The Winterblessed line has been Riot's holiday season push for a few years now, replacing the older Snowdown stuff with a more refined winter mythology angle. Hwei fits it reasonably well. Ice and paint share that fluid, flowing visual language. Could be better, could be worse.

Spirit Blossom though. Might be overthinking it but this skinline was practically designed for a champion like Hwei. The whole line draws from Ionian spirit world aesthetics - cherry blossoms, spiritual energy, otherworldly beauty. Hwei's lore already ties him to Ionia and artistic expression. The overlap is massive. When I first saw the Spirit Blossom splash I immediately locked it in for my ranked games. Just felt right.

What skinlines would I want to see next for Hwei? Personally I think he'd kill it in Porcelain. The ceramic art angle with his painter kit would be incredible. Or Heavenscale for that East Asian dragon mythology fused with ink painting. High Noon could work in a weird way too - imagine him painting wanted posters that come to life as his abilities. Fair warning, this is pure speculation on my part. But Riot tends to slot newer champions into their big annual skinlines pretty quickly, so we'll probably see Hwei in something unexpected within the next year or two.

The Spirit Blossom skinline in particular has a dedicated fanbase. Played against a Spirit Blossom Hwei last Tuesday in a Diamond game and my support pinged the skin three times in champ select. People notice it. That's the mark of a good cosmetic choice.

Budget vs Premium Options

This section is straightforward for Hwei because there is no budget option. Both skins cost 1350 RP. No 520 RP throwback skin, no 750 RP simple recolor, no 975 RP middle ground. You're paying Epic price or nothing.

1350 RP for either skin feels fair honestly. Both change VFX across all his ability combos, both have new recall animations, both have updated sound effects. For the amount of spell variations Hwei has, these Epics probably required more work than a typical 1350 skin on a simpler champion. Think about it - a basic mage has QWER and passive. Hwei has essentially nine castable abilities plus his ult. Each one needs new particles.

If you can only buy one, get Spirit Blossom. If you want both, Winterblessed is worth having in rotation for seasonal variety. Spammed Winterblessed during the holiday season and Spirit Blossom the rest of the year. Good system.

No Legendary exists yet for Hwei. When it drops - and it will because Riot knows he's popular in high elo and pro play - that'll be the real test. A Legendary with new voice lines and completely reimagined ability animations on a champion with this many spell variations? Could be one of the best Legendaries in the game if they commit to it. But for now, 1350 is your ceiling and your floor. No cheap alternatives.

Why Hwei's Kit Makes Every Skin Matter More

Most champions have four abilities and a passive. Hwei has three ability groups (QWE) each containing three sub-spells, plus his ultimate. That's ten distinct spell animations minimum. When a skin redesigns Hwei's VFX, you're getting substantially more visual content than you would on, say, a Garen skin where Q makes sword glow, W adds a shield, E spins, R drops a sword. Done.

Hwei's QQ (the fireball), QW (the fear zone), QE (the long-range poke) all need unique particles that feel distinct from each other AND distinct from the base skin. Same for his W and E trees. Been playing this champion since season 14 started and I still occasionally mix up which sub-ability I'm casting in hectic teamfights. Good skin VFX actually help with clarity here. Winterblessed makes each spell tree feel more visually separated because the ice effects vary in intensity across Q (aggressive, sharp ice), W (soft protective snow), and E (spreading frost). Helpful distinction.

(Sidebar for Hwei mains specifically: if you've ever whiffed an EE when you meant to cast EQ in a crucial gank, you know exactly why clear VFX matter on this champion more than most.)

This complexity also means Hwei skins take longer to develop. Not gonna lie, I think thats part of why he only has two so far. Riot's skin team probably needs to allocate more artist hours per Hwei skin than they would for a standard champion. The payoff is that when a Hwei skin lands, it genuinely transforms the gameplay experience in a way that a simple texture swap never could. Every teamfight looks different. Every combo in lane feels fresh.

Took this into ranked for maybe 50 games last split alternating between both skins and base. The visual difference is noticeable enough that opponents in my Diamond games have commented on it in all chat. Had someone type "that Spirit Blossom W looks sick" after I landed a clutch WW shield on my ADC during a dragon fight around 2 AM one night. Small moments but they add up to why cosmetics matter on a champion this visually busy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Hwei have?

Two skins total right now. Winterblessed Hwei and Spirit Blossom Hwei. Both Epic tier at 1350 RP. Small catalog for sure, but he's a newer champion released in December 2023 so the count will grow. Riot typically ramps up skin releases after a champion's been out for a year or two. Expect more soon.

What is the best Hwei skin?

Spirit Blossom Hwei. Not even close in my opinion. The thematic overlap between his painter kit and the Spirit Blossom aesthetic is perfect. VFX on every ability just look cleaner and more cohesive than Winterblessed. Been my go-to Hwei skin since it dropped and I dont see that changing until a Legendary comes along.

What is the cheapest Hwei skin?

Both skins cost 1350 RP so there's no budget option. Tied at the same price point. If you want a cheaper Hwei experience, base skin is genuinely good looking and free. No 520 or 750 RP skins exist for him yet. Might change eventually but for now Epic tier is your only choice.

Does Hwei have a Legendary skin?

Nope. No Legendary yet. Both skins are Epic (1350 RP). Given how many unique ability animations Hwei has across his QWE trees, a Legendary with new voice lines and completely reworked VFX would be massive. I think it's coming eventually. Champion's popular enough in ranked and pro play to justify it.

What skinlines is Hwei in?

Winterblessed and Spirit Blossom. Two strong skinlines honestly. Winterblessed is Riot's winter holiday line and Spirit Blossom pulls from Ionian spirit mythology. Spirit Blossom fits Hwei's artist fantasy better in my experience. Both are well-regarded lines that Riot puts real effort into each year.

Does Hwei have chromas?

Depends on the specific skin. Epic skins at 1350 RP typically get chroma sets, so check each skin's individual page for the full chroma breakdown. Chromas on Hwei are worth looking at because they recolor all those ability VFX across his nine sub-spells. More visual variety than chromas on simpler champs.

When was Hwei's last skin released?

Spirit Blossom Hwei was his most recent skin. Both skins dropped in 2023, with Winterblessed arriving as his launch skin in December. He's due for something new. Riot usually cycles back to popular champions within a year or two, and Hwei's pick rate in ranked has stayed solid enough to warrant attention.

Is Hwei worth buying skins for?

Yes if you main him. Absolutely. His kit has so many individual spell animations that a good skin transforms the entire gameplay feel. Spammed both skins in Diamond and they genuinely change how the champion reads in teamfights. Spirit Blossom especially. If you're just trying him out casually, base skin is fine though. No rush.
