First time I saw Guardian of the Sands Skarner loading in, I thought someone was playing a different champion entirely. The gold and turquoise color palette shifts Skarner so far from his default crystal scorpion look that it takes a second to register. Been running this skin on and off since season 5, and honestly not gonna lie, it still holds up better than most 975 RP skins from that era.
The sand scorpion treatment
The model rework turns Skarner into this ancient Egyptian guardian aesthetic. Full gold armor plating with jade and turquoise accents running along his legs and tail. The crystal on his back gets swapped for what looks like a massive turquoise gemstone, and the overall silhouette reads more regal than the base skin’s raw Brackern energy. Big improvement.
VFX got updated too, which at 975 RP wasnt always guaranteed back in 2015. His Q sends out sandy golden particles instead of the usual purple crystal effects. The E projectile trails sand behind it, and his passive proc lights up with that same warm gold. Played maybe 40 games with this last month in Diamond and the Q particles specifically feel cleaner to track in teamfights than base Skarner. Could be wrong here but I think the contrast against Summoner’s Rift green actually helps with visual clarity.
The recall animation is the real highlight though. Skarner does this pharaoh-style pose while sand swirls around him. Short and clean. No new voice lines, voice stays default, which is fine because Imari Williams already did solid work on the base VO. The growls and crystal references dont perfectly match the sand theme but nobody’s paying attention to that mid jungle clear.
Where Guardian of the Sands fits
Released April 26, 2015. Right around MSI season if I remember right. Sixmorevodka Studio handled the splash, and they absolutely delivered on the splash. The composition puts Skarner front and center emerging from desert ruins with that golden glow. One of their better pieces from that year.
The Guardian of the Sands skinline is one of Riot’s more underrated thematic lines. Rammus, Xerath, Kha’Zix, Rengar all got skins in this set. Skarner fits the guardian fantasy naturally – giant scorpion protecting ancient tombs. Makes more sense than half the skinline assignments Riot does these days (random aside: remember when they put Gragas in space). The Guardian of the Sands line leans into that Egyptian mythology hard and Skarner’s scorpion body sells it without forcing anything.
No chromas on this one. Zero. Kinda feels like a missed opportunity because a dark obsidian or ruby variant would go hard on this model, but Riot never came back to it. This is an Epic tier skin sitting at 975 RP, which is the old Epic pricing before everything moved to 1350. Shop has it permanently so you can pick it up whenever.
Should you lock in Guardian of the Sands Skarner?
Real verdict: for Skarner mains this is a solid pickup. Not the flashiest option in his catalog. Cosmic Sting and the reworked Battlecast Alpha both exist. But Guardian of the Sands Skarner has a specific vibe that the others dont match. That ancient protector energy.
975 RP feels fair for what you get. New model, new VFX on abilities, new recall. Voice pack is base only but thats standard for this price point. I ran into maybe two other people using this skin all of last season in my Diamond games, so there’s the rarity factor if you care about standing out in the loading screen. Last Tuesday I had a game where the enemy Kayn invaded my topside and I stunned him under tower with the golden E – the sand trail looked clean against river. Small things like that.
If you one-trick Skarner and want something different from the purple crystal default, Guardian of the Sands is the budget option that still delivers. Skip it if you already own Cosmic Sting though, that one edges it out on pure visual quality. For everyone else spamming Skarner in solo queue this season, 975 RP well spent for mains. The skin just reads well on the Rift and after nearly a decade it hasn’t aged as rough as other 2015 releases. Worth the lock-in.
