Mel Medarda from Arcane landed in League of Legends on January 23, 2025 as champion number 170. She goes mid, her title is The Soul’s Reflection, and her W is the only thing in LoL that sends projectiles back at whoever threw them. Patch 26.7, B tier, 47.8% win rate. Below: her full Arcane story, every ability, 18k-match build data, counters, and where she sits right now.

Who Is Mel Medarda in Arcane?

You know the setup from the show: she’s 26, Ambessa’s daughter, and she held a council seat in Piltover until Season 2 broke everything open. Gold-flecked eyes, curly hair with actual gold cuffs in it, white and gold in every scene. The show makes her look like the most powerful person in any room. That part is intentional.

What most characters don’t know for most of the show: Mel Medarda’s Arcane storyline has a secret at its core. Ambessa had an affair with a mage named Rudo from Basilich, a man connected to the Black Rose. Mel’s magic came from him. She didn’t train for it. It was just there, the whole time she was trying to be a politician.

Why Mel Was Exiled to Piltover

Ambessa raised Mel to use aggression and political violence. Mel’s older brother Kino held the opposite view. He told her war was a failure of statecraft. He died for that belief. Mel kept it anyway.

Because Mel refused to match Ambessa’s standard, her mother shipped her to Piltover under the cover of managing family business interests. It looked like punishment. Mel turned it into a career. She spotted Jayce’s Hextech research before anyone on the Council paid attention, backed him at the right time, and used that connection to build real influence. By the end of Arcane’s first act, she was the wealthiest person in Piltover while still being, by Noxian standards, the poorest Medarda alive.

What Mel Built on the Piltover Council

Her time on the Council changed Piltover in ways that outlasted her tenure:

  • Got Jayce onto the Council through strategic backing at the right moment
  • Pushed Hextech toward civilian use rather than military hardware
  • Engineered Heimerdinger’s removal when his conservatism became an obstacle
  • Blocked Ambessa’s repeated attempts to redirect Piltover’s technology toward warfare

None of it was loud. But Piltover at the end of Arcane Season 2 looked very different from the city Mel walked into as an exile. Most of that change came from her.

Mel’s Magic and the Black Rose in Arcane

Season 2 of Arcane stops pretending Mel Medarda is just a politician. When Jinx’s rocket came for the Council Chambers, Mel’s back lit up gold and a barrier formed around her and Jayce. Nobody taught her that. Her power comes from Rudo’s bloodline, and it had been sitting there her whole life while she tried to keep it buried.

LeBlanc identifies Mel’s power as that of an empath. Because of that, Mel can sense other people’s inner states, redirect magical energy, and generate protective light barriers. She is, as the Black Rose sees it, a conduit who can mirror and bend the magic of others. That’s why they came for her.

The Black Rose and the Oculorum

The Black Rose is an old Noxian cabal. They operate with no official records and pursue individuals with rare magical ability. They kidnap Mel and hold her in a magical prison called the Oculorum. Inside, someone impersonates Kino to get inside her head and forces her to confront her true origins.

Through this, she learns how much Ambessa kept from her. She can’t manage the situation through politics. So she shatters the Oculorum’s restraints, confronts Ambessa, defeats her, and returns to Noxus as head of House Medarda. Her League of Legends version picks up right after these events.

Before taking Mel into ranked, watch Riot’s official Champion Spotlight. It covers her full kit and the key situations where Rebuttal pays off the most.

Mel Medarda in League of Legends

Mel Medarda released with patch 25.S1.2 on January 23, 2025. She was the first champion of the 2025 season and tied directly to the Noxian-themed Season 1. Players could unlock her for free by completing seasonal missions at launch. Her full stats, lore bio, and skin list are on the official Mel champion page on the League of Legends website.

Riot’s lead gameplay designer confirmed at launch that her kit promotes mid lane over support at high level because of the damage focus. She can work as support, but she needs items to make her passive execute threatening. Support income doesn’t provide that fast enough.

Mel Medarda Abilities Explained

Everything in Mel Medarda’s Arcane kit traces back to the same thing she showed in the show: the ability to send attacks back at whoever threw them. Every other ability sets that up or builds on it.

Full Mel Medarda ability kit in LoL: Searing Brilliance, Radiant Volley, Rebuttal, Solar Snare, Golden Eclipse
Slot Name What It Does
Passive Searing Brilliance Each ability or auto adds 3 bonus projectiles on the next attack, up to 9. These apply Overwhelm stacks. When stacks exceed the enemy’s health threshold, the target is executed.
Q Radiant Volley Fires a barrage of projectiles at a target area. Slows enemies at the outer edge. Roots anyone caught at the center.
W Rebuttal Forms a barrier for 0.75 seconds. All incoming enemy projectiles are reflected back at their source. Grants a speed boost. Prevents incoming damage. The only reflection mechanic in the game.
E Solar Snare Fires a radiant orb forward. Roots enemies at the center. Slows and deals damage over time in the surrounding area.
R Golden Eclipse Strikes all enemies marked with Overwhelm simultaneously, regardless of range. Damage scales with stacks. Each rank also increases Overwhelm’s base damage.

How Rebuttal Works: The Reflection Mechanic

Rebuttal is the reason people play Mel. When activated, it catches all incoming projectiles from enemy champions, destroys them, then fires those same projectiles back at their source. The reflected versions convert all damage to magic damage, with physical damage reduced to 70% before conversion.

It works on ultimates from Jinx, Ezreal, and Veigar. It catches Morgana Q, Lux Q, Lux R, and Syndra R. Learning which abilities your five or six most common mid-lane opponents use as projectiles takes one or two normal games with focus. Once you know the list, Rebuttal stops being reactive and becomes something you bait on purpose.

However, it does not catch abilities with proximity effects, such as Nautilus Q or Amumu Q, or turret shots. Those bypass the barrier entirely.

How the Mel Medarda Abilities Combo Works

The standard combo is: auto attack first to get bonus projectiles rolling, then Q to root the enemy at center, then E to slow them while they’re rooted, then auto again with nine stacks active, then R to hit all Overwhelm-marked targets. If the stacks are high enough, the R will execute rather than just damage.

Because Golden Eclipse hits every marked enemy on the map at once, teamfights where you’ve touched four or five people with your passive are where the ultimate multiplies in value. Don’t burn it on one target with two stacks when you can wait and collect stacks on the whole enemy team.

Best Mel Medarda Build and Runes (Patch 26.7)

These numbers come from 18,681 tracked matches in patch 26.7, Emerald plus. Mel Medarda in Arcane lore is a controller and a protector, and her mid lane build reflects that: you want range, ability haste, and AP. She’s B tier right now. The builds below reflect current win rate data, not what worked at launch.

Item Build for Mel Mid Lane

Start with Luden’s Echo. It synergizes with her long-range poke and gives the ability haste she needs to use Q and E more frequently. After that, follow this order:

  1. Luden’s Echo (first item, highest priority)
  2. Sorcerer’s Shoes
  3. Shadowflame (good against shielded targets, which come up often)
  4. Rabadon’s Deathcap (major AP spike)
  5. Zhonya’s Hourglass (necessary against assassins and gap-closers)
  6. Void Staff (if enemies have magic resistance, swap in here)

An alternate first item is Blackfire Torch. That build also runs 47.9% win rate, so the gap is tiny. Against heavy magic resistance, Blackfire into Shadowflame hits harder.

Best Runes for Mel Medarda in 2026

Arcane Comet is the standard keystone. It synergizes with Radiant Volley’s poke and gives consistent laning pressure. Take Manaflow Band for mana, Transcendence for ability haste, and Scorch for early lane damage.

For secondary runes, Coup de Grace and Presence of Mind work best for most matchups. If you’re facing burst assassins, swap the secondary tree to Resolve with Bone Plating and Overgrowth instead.

Summoner spells are Flash and Teleport as default. Take Ignite if you want early kill pressure, but Teleport gives more mid-game macro value.

Skill Order for Mel

Max Q first. Radiant Volley is your primary damage tool and cooldown reduction accelerates your whole combo. Max E second for more utility and damage. Max W last because its cooldown stays high regardless of level, so the improvement per rank is minimal. Take a point in R at 6, 11, and 16.

How to Play Mel Medarda Mid Lane

I’ve watched a lot of Mel mid in high-elo replays and the players who perform well consistently do three things differently from those who don’t.

First, they auto attack between every ability. Ability, wait, ability, wait is slower than ability, auto, ability, auto. Every auto with bonus projectiles active builds Overwhelm faster. The passive makes your autos worth casting in fights.

Second, they know the reflection list before ranked. Spend one normal game just paying attention to which abilities trigger Rebuttal. Some abilities that look like projectiles aren’t coded as one. Getting caught out by that in a ranked game is frustrating and avoidable. Once you know the list, you can bait an enemy ult and send it back for a free kill.

Third, they use Q and E as setup, not as finishers. Root with Radiant Volley or pin with Solar Snare. Let Overwhelm stacks build while the enemy can’t escape. Then fire Golden Eclipse while they’re immobile. The damage numbers are the same either way, but landing it on a rooted target versus a moving one is a completely different proposition.

For more on building decision-making habits at a high level, the guide on playing League like Ruler covers macro patterns that directly apply to Mel’s mid-game timing windows.

Also, pay attention to your passive stacks on towers. Hitting a tower before recalling while your passive is active speeds up structure damage meaningfully. It’s an easy habit that adds up over a game.

Mel Medarda Counters and Who She Counters

Mel’s counter matchups split cleanly based on one question: does the enemy deal damage through projectiles? If yes, Mel has options. If no, she doesn’t.

Champions That Counter Mel Medarda

Zed, Fizz, and Katarina are the hardest matchups. All three deal primary damage through dashes and melee range. Rebuttal catches nothing from them. Against those three, you’re playing a positioning game, not a reflection game. The goal is to survive lane, scale, and look for fights where they’ve already committed their gap-closers. Yasuo and Irelia also work well against her if they outplay the W timing.

If you’re queueing mid and see a Zed or Fizz on the other side, take Zhonya’s Hourglass earlier than usual. It’s your actual safety net in those matchups.

Champions Mel Medarda Counters

Mel punishes mages and marksmen with projectile-heavy kits. Jinx, Ezreal, and Veigar all have ultimates that come back. Lux and Morgana throw their main abilities as projectiles. In those matchups, your W alone changes what the enemy is willing to do in lane. They’ll stop using their best abilities aggressively because the threat of having them reflected is too expensive.

She also works well next to hard CC teammates. Thresh, Jarvan, and Nautilus extend lockdown windows that let Overwhelm stacks build on targets who can’t escape. A CC-heavy support or jungler fixes most of her early gap-closer vulnerability. For more on understanding role matchups in general, see the guide to popular roles in League of Legends.

Mel Medarda Skins in 2026

Mel currently has two available skins plus a prestige variant. Both were designed around Mel Medarda’s Arcane storyline, so they fit the character well.

Arcane Councilor Mel is her launch skin at 1350 RP. It shows her in the Piltover Council aesthetic from Arcane Season 1, with white and gold colors and council-style spell effects. It comes with 8 chromas. This is the skin most players use because the particle effects are clean and easy to read in-game.

Winterblessed Mel is her second skin. The Prestige Winterblessed Mel variant was released later and has not appeared on sale as of April 2026 based on tracked sale history. The full skin list and current availability are in the LoL skins catalog.

Is Mel Medarda Good in 2026?

Mel Medarda from Arcane is viable but not strong in 2026. In patch 26.7, she sits at 47.8% win rate across 18,681 Emerald-plus matches. That’s B tier. Her win rate has been here since the nerfs in patch 25.24.

Honest take: she rewards players who actually learn the Rebuttal list. If you know which abilities are reflectable in your five or six common matchups, you win the lanes she’s supposed to win. If you don’t, you float at average. The skill gap between a prepared Mel player and an unprepared one is bigger than most other mid laners.

When did Mel Medarda release in League of Legends?

January 23, 2025, patch 25.S1.2. Champion number 170, first new release of 2025. Riot set up Noxian season missions at launch so people coming over from Arcane could unlock her without spending anything.

What is Mel Medarda’s best build in patch 26.7?

Patch 26.7: Luden’s Echo first, then Sorcerer’s Shoes, Shadowflame, Rabadon’s Deathcap, Zhonya’s Hourglass, Void Staff. Runes: Arcane Comet keystone, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch. Skill order is Q first, then E, then W.

What are Mel Medarda’s hardest counters in League of Legends?

Yasuo and Irelia also work well against her if they can dodge her W. Against these matchups, focus on farming safely and calling for jungle help.

What is Mel Medarda’s unique ability in League of Legends?

Mel Medarda’s unique ability is Rebuttal (W). It is the first and only true projectile reflection mechanic in League of Legends history. When activated, Mel forms a barrier for 0.75 seconds that sends all incoming enemy projectiles back at their source, converting damage to magic damage. It works on ultimates from Jinx, Ezreal, Veigar, and dozens of other projectile-based abilities.

Who is Mel Medarda’s father in Arcane?

Mel Medarda’s biological father is Rudo, a mage from Basilich with ties to the Black Rose. Ambessa kept the affair secret. Mel’s innate magical powers as an empath come directly from Rudo’s bloodline, not from any training or study.

Is Mel Medarda good in 2026?

Mel Medarda is a B-tier mid lane mage in 2026. As of patch 26.7, she holds a 47.8% win rate across over 18,000 tracked matches. She is viable but not dominant. Her Rebuttal mechanic remains powerful in the right matchups, so players who know which enemy abilities are reflectable still win those matchups consistently.
