Skarner Skins
6 skins availableSkarner is one of those champions where the skin catalog tells you exactly how Riot felt about him over the years. Six skins total from 2011 to 2020, then radio silence. Not gonna lie, for a champion that got a full VGU rework, the cosmetic support has been thin. I've been playing Skarner on and off since season 3 and the skin situation has always been a sore spot for mains. But there's a Legendary in there, a couple solid Epics, and some budget options that hold up better than you'd expect. Small roster, but it hits harder than most people think.

How Skarner's Skin Collection Shaped Up
Six skins across nine years. That's the full picture for Skarner. His first two dropped in 2011 alongside his release: Earthrune Skarner and Sandscourge Skarner, both Standard tier. Basic texture swaps, no new particles, no new animations. Standard stuff for that era of League. Every champion launched with one or two extra skins back then and they were always just recolors.
Then Battlecast Alpha Skarner landed in 2014. Legendary tier, 1820 RP, full package. New model, new VFX, new VO, the works. Honestly that skin carried the entire Skarner cosmetic lineup for years. Could be wrong here but I think it was one of the first Legendaries for a jungler that wasn't Lee Sin or something popular.
Guardian of the Sands came in 2015. Epic at 975 RP which feels like a steal by todays standards. Solid Egyptian theme. Then nothing until 2020 when Riot dropped both Cosmic Sting Skarner and Mecha Kingdoms Skarner back to back. Two Epics in the same year after five years of nothing. Classic Riot scheduling.
The tier breakdown sits at two Standard, three Epic, one Legendary. No Ultimate, no Mythic, no Prestige. For a champion that's been in the game since 2011 thats a pretty lean selection. Compare that to someone like Lux or Ezreal and the gap is massive. But Skarner mains aren't exactly a huge demographic so it tracks. The rework could change things going forward but as of right now, six skins is what you get.
Worth noting the year range here. 2011 to 2020. Four years with zero new Skarner skins as of writing this. Been spamming him in ranked since the rework and every game I'm looking at the same rotation. (Random aside: I genuinely think Riot forgot Skarner exists sometimes between rework announcements.)
Best Skins for Skarner
Battlecast Alpha Skarner. Full stop. This is the Skarner skin if you can only own one. Legendary tier at 1820 RP and it earns every point of that price tag. The entire model transforms him from a crystal scorpion into a Battlecast mech with Viktor's signature red-and-metal aesthetic. His Q sends out mechanical shockwaves, W shield has this industrial energy barrier look, E fires a different projectile entirely. The R is where it really shines though. Dragging someone back with the Battlecast ult animation feels so much heavier than base. New voice lines too, robotic filter on everything, references to the Battlecast line. Been my go-to Skarner skin since season 5 and I dont see that changing.
Cosmic Sting Skarner takes second place for me. Epic tier at 1350 RP. The Cosmic skinline fits him surprisingly well. Purple and blue space crystal aesthetic across the whole model. His abilities get that cosmic particle treatment, stars and galaxies in the VFX. The Q ground slam has these nebula ripples. Looks clean. Not sure if it's just me but the auto attack animations feel smoother on this skin specifically. Played maybe 40 games on it last season and the visual clarity is solid for teamfights.
Guardian of the Sands Skarner at 975 RP is the budget king. Gold and turquoise color scheme, Egyptian tomb guardian vibes. For an Epic that costs less than most Epics today it delivers above its weight class. The sand particles on abilities are subtle but present. I ran this one exclusively through season 6 and 7 before Cosmic Sting existed. Still holds up in 2024.
Mecha Kingdoms Skarner rounds out the competitive picks. Epic tier, mech warrior aesthetic with an Eastern influence. The model is detailed and the ability VFX have that mechanical crunch to them. Feels different from Battlecast because Mecha Kingdoms leans more ornate where Battlecast is industrial. Good skin. Not best in slot but good.
Kinda feels like Sandscourge Skarner gets forgotten entirely. Standard tier, desert recolor. It exists. That's about all I can say. Fine for the price point if you just want something different from base but don't expect new particles or sounds.
Skinlines and Where Skarner Fits
Skarner shows up in five skinlines: Battlecast, Guardian of the Sands, Cosmic, Mecha Kingdoms, and High Noon. The thematic range here is actually wider than most champions with six skins get. Mechanical, ancient, cosmic, mech warrior. Covers a lot of ground.
Battlecast is the obvious best fit. Skarner's scorpion design translates perfectly into the Viktor-engineered Battlecast universe. The whole predator-machine thing works because his kit is about hunting and dragging targets. Makes sense narratively and visually. The Battlecast line includes Vel'Koz, Cho'Gath, Urgot, and Skarner fits right in as this relentless pursuit machine.
Cosmic is the second best thematic fit in my opinion. Crystal scorpion made of stars and cosmic energy. The Cosmic skinline already has that crystalline aesthetic baked into it so Skarner doesn't need to stretch far to fit the theme. His passive and abilities already have crystal elements in base so layering space VFX on top of that just works naturally.
Guardian of the Sands is fine. Desert guardian, ancient protector, sure. It works thematically but it doesn't elevate the champion the way Battlecast or Cosmic does. Mecha Kingdoms is similar, competent but not revelatory. (Sidebar for jungle mains: the Mecha Kingdoms recall animation is actually sick though, worth watching at least once.)
Real talk though, I want to see Skarner in Dark Star or Elderwood. The crystal scorpion fantasy could go way harder in either of those lines. Maybe after the rework settles Riot will cook something up. Season 14 gave us nothing for him. Hoping season 15 delivers.
Budget vs Premium Picks
Price range on Skarner skins goes from 520 RP for Earthrune up to 1820 RP for Battlecast Alpha. Not a huge spread compared to champions with Ultimate skins but there's a clear value ladder here.
If you're climbing ranked and just want a skin that feels different from base without spending much, Guardian of the Sands at 975 RP is the answer. Best value Skarner skin by a mile. New particles, solid model, doesn't break the bank. Used this one for two full seasons before upgrading. No regrets on the purchase.
If you main Skarner and want the full experience, Battlecast Alpha at 1820 RP is non-negotiable. New VO, new everything. It's a real Legendary, not one of those older Legendaries that aged poorly. The VFX still hold up and the voice filter gives the champion a completely different personality in game. 1820 RP well spent for mains.
Cosmic Sting at 1350 RP splits the difference. Premium Epic, modern VFX, clean model. If Legendary pricing feels steep and you want something above the budget options, this is where to land. Might be the smartest purchase if you only play Skarner occasionally in your jungle rotation rather than one-tricking him.
Earthrune and Sandscourge at Standard pricing are basically recolors. Skip unless you're a completionist. That 520-975 RP is better spent toward the Guardian of the Sands or Cosmic Sting purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many skins does Skarner have?
Six skins total as of 2024. Two Standard tier from his 2011 release, three Epics spread across 2015 and 2020, and one Legendary from 2014. Not a huge roster but there's enough variety to find something you like. Been waiting on skin number seven for a while now honestly.
What is the best Skarner skin?
Battlecast Alpha Skarner. Not close. Legendary tier with full new VO, model, animations, and VFX. Transforms him into a Battlecast mech that feels completely different from base. Been my main Skarner skin for years and I keep coming back to it over the Epics. S-tier Skarner cosmetic.
What is the cheapest Skarner skin?
Earthrune Skarner at 520 RP. Standard tier texture swap from his 2011 launch. No new particles or sounds, just a different color scheme. Functional if you want anything besides default but Guardian of the Sands at 975 RP is the real budget pick. Way more value per RP spent there.
Does Skarner have a Legendary skin?
Yeah, one. Battlecast Alpha Skarner at 1820 RP, released in 2014. Full Legendary package with new voice lines, model, ability VFX, recall animation, everything. Part of the Battlecast skinline alongside Cho'Gath and Vel'Koz. Still holds up years later which is rare for older Legendaries.
What skinlines is Skarner in?
Five skinlines total. Battlecast, Guardian of the Sands, Cosmic, Mecha Kingdoms, and High Noon. Battlecast fits him the best thematically, Cosmic is a close second. Pretty diverse range for only six skins. Could be wrong but I think he's one of the few champs in both Battlecast and Cosmic.
Does Skarner have chromas?
Some of his newer Epics have chromas available. Cosmic Sting and Mecha Kingdoms both got chroma sets when they released in 2020. The older skins like Battlecast Alpha and Guardian of the Sands don't have any. If you want color variety, stick with the 2020 releases for options.
When was Skarner's last skin released?
Cosmic Sting Skarner in 2020. That's it. Four plus years without a new skin as of writing this. The VGU rework happened but no new cosmetic dropped alongside it. Hoping Riot has something cooking for him soon because the drought is real. Mains have been patient long enough.
Is Skarner worth buying skins for?
If you main him or play him regularly in jungle, absolutely. Battlecast Alpha alone justifies the investment. The rework made him more fun to play and having a Legendary skin that changes the entire feel of the champion is worth it. Casual players can grab Guardian of the Sands cheap and call it a day.
