Rammus himself showed up on July 10, 2009, a few months after the beta kicked off. This particular skin dropped when the beta ended on October 21. It is basically Rammus cosplaying as Bowser from Mario: green shell, little crown, the whole thing. I first ran into it in a Silver game back in Season 3. Had no idea what I was looking at. Thought the guy was running some kind of modded skin because I could not find it anywhere in the shop. Nobody told me it was never in the shop.

What Is the King Rammus Skin?
King Rammus is just a retexture. Green shell instead of the default one, slightly different color tones, and a crown sitting on top. No new ability VFX, no recall animation, no voice lines. Nothing.
Yeah, by 2026 standards that sounds like a joke. But back in 2009 the game didn’t even have a public server. Maybe 40 champions existed. Every skin was a retexture, and people were happy to get anything at all.

The Bowser thing is not subtle at all. Green shell, reddish tones, crown. Some players think Riot deliberately avoids showing this skin anywhere official because Nintendo’s lawyers are famously aggressive about IP. Hard to say if that is actually why, but the fact is Riot has never put King Rammus in a skin spotlight, a promo, or any marketing material since 2009. What Makes This Skin So Rare?
OK so why can’t you just buy it? A few reasons stack on top of each other.
The LoL closed beta ran from April to October 21, 2009. If you got invited and made an account during that window, you got King Rammus. When beta ended, every account got wiped and the skin was auto-added to the fresh reset. No code. No gift. No trade option. It just showed up on your account.
That distribution method is the key. With skins like PAX Twisted Fate or Silver Kayle, Riot handed out redeemable codes. Those codes could be sold, traded, or shared online. King Rammus never had a code, so it never entered any secondary market on its own. The only way it changes hands is when someone sells the entire account.
And then there is the time factor. We are talking about accounts from 2009. A lot of those original beta testers quit the game years ago. Some accounts got banned. Some people simply forgot their login info. After 17 years, the number of active accounts with King Rammus is tiny.
On r/leagueoflegends, threads about King Rammus pop up every few months, and the comments are always the same mix of “I have it and I forget it exists” from beta veterans and “I’ve played since Season 3 and I’ve literally never seen one in a game” from everyone else. - Riot Support will not add the skin to your account under any circumstances.
- Skin codes for King Rammus never existed in the first place, and Riot disabled all skin code redemption in 2014 anyway.
So if you want it, you are looking at third-party account marketplaces. The EUW accounts with King Rammus plus Black Alistar, PAX skins, and multiple Victorious skins from early seasons are the most expensive. I saw one listing on EpicNPC for $950 that had over 1,100 skins and every rare skin in the game. On the other end, you can find a bare BR account with just King Rammus for around $20. The sweet spot for most people is probably the $40-$80 range on NA or EUW where you get the skin plus a handful of other legacy cosmetics.

PAX Twisted Fate is generally considered the single rarest skin in the game because only about 20,000 codes were handed out at the 2009 expo. King Rammus probably has a larger total pool since the closed beta had more participants, but the survival rate of those accounts after 17 years is the real question.
One thing that separates King Rammus from all the PAX and Collector’s Edition skins: it never had a code. The PAX skins and Silver Kayle at least circulated on eBay and forums before Riot killed code redemption in 2014. King Rammus was locked to accounts from day one. If you just want a cool Rammus skin and do not care about rarity, Astronaut Rammus and Durian Defender Rammus are both solid picks with actual new VFX and animations. But if you want the OG flex, nothing beats King Rammus. Pulling up to a ranked game with that green Bowser shell tells everyone in the lobby that your account has been around since before most of them even heard of League.

Rammus After the Patch 25.12 Rework
Quick heads-up if you are considering a King Rammus account: Rammus got a solid mid-scope update in Patch 25.12 (June 2025). Riot touched his passive, W, E, and R. The goal was to stop him from being a pure “last-pick into full AD” gimmick and turn him into something you can actually blind-pick in the jungle.
Here is what changed. His passive (Spiked Shell) used to do magic damage on hit. Gone. Now it converts 15% of his total armor and MR into bonus AD. His W scales off magic resistance too, so you are not locked into pure armor stacking anymore. E lost the attack speed steroid but got magic damage to jungle camps (his clear was painfully slow before this). And his R dropped the weird stacking shockwave thing in favor of a fat slow and a much cleaner Q into R combo.
The community reaction on Reddit and Twitter/X was mostly positive. Players on r/RammusMains called it a “long overdue modernization” and appreciated the MR scaling since it meant Rammus was no longer a troll pick into AP-heavy comps. His win rate settled around 51-52% in Platinum+ after the dust settled, which is solid for a champion that used to hover at 49% outside of full-AD lobbies.
So what does this mean for the King Rammus skin specifically? Nothing visual changed. No texture update, no new VFX. But the champion underneath is in a way better spot than he has been in years, which means you will actually get to play him without your team flaming you in champ select. King Rammus is classified as Limited. That is the most restrictive tier Riot uses. Legacy skins rotate back into the store or can drop from Hextech chests. Limited skins do not. Riot committed to this policy back in 2012 when they moved some old skins from Limited to Legacy (like Snowmerdinger or Kitty Kat Katarina), but King Rammus was specifically excluded from that migration. It stays Limited permanently.
So when someone tells you “just wait, it might come back during an event,” they are confusing Limited with Legacy. The King Rammus skin is never coming back through any official channel. Period.
The Bowser Connection and Copyright Question
Look, everyone knows what this skin is supposed to be. Green shell. Crown. It is Bowser. Riot has never said that out loud, but the LoL Wiki, every community site, and anyone with eyes can tell it is a straight King Koopa reference from the Mario games.
And Nintendo is… well, Nintendo. They sue everyone. Some players think Riot deliberately buried this skin from all promotional content and spotlight videos to keep Nintendo’s legal team from noticing. True or not, Riot has not featured King Rammus in anything official since the skin dropped in 2009. Zero spotlight videos, zero event mentions, nothing.
So will Riot ever bring it back? Almost certainly not. Limited skins have a standing policy of staying limited. And a skin that might draw a trademark complaint from Nintendo is probably the last one Riot would want to put back in the spotlight.
Should You Buy an Account Just for This Skin?
Honestly? If you are a skin collector, yes. The King Rammus skin is a real piece of League history. The game was not even public yet when this thing came out. You cannot earn it, craft it, or wait for it to rotate back. And it gets rarer every single year as more beta accounts go dark.
If you only care about gameplay and visual quality, you are paying for a texture swap from 2009. No flashy VFX, no emotes, nothing. Rammus is still mostly a jungle tank pick, though the Patch 25.12 rework made him way more playable than he used to be (he is actually pickable into AP comps now, which was a meme before).
But in my experience, rare skins are about the reaction in the loading screen. When I see a King Rammus or a PAX Twisted Fate in my lobby, I know that account has history. And in a game where skins are the main form of self-expression, that kind of rarity carries weight.
